Ray Keepers--- DO YOU RUN A UV on your tank--and why?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
wasn't it in canida that had a ray exibit and ozone stoped functioning and they lost like 30 rays?

Glad to hear. Wonder if it was a water issue and metals concentrations from low well waters from drought. Guess we will never really know.

I have been keeping stingrays of the potamotrygon genus in tapwater, without an UV for the past 8 years. I havent had any problems yet. :)

I guess the danish germs are less aggressive?? ;)

[3] A UV sterilizer will not kill beneficial bacteria such aerobic bacteria, as this bacterium is effective when attached to a surface of high water flow such as the sponge of a sponge filter, not when in the water column. In fact relatively new scientific evidence shows nitrifying bacteria to be sticky and adheres to the surfaces like glue this is why the myth of UV Sterilizers killing beneficial bacteria is just that, a myth. It still may be best to turn off a Sterilizer unit when introducing bacteria in liquid form to seed a new aquarium.

I guess he has never been to the bio part of a water treatment facility. :)

I would be carefull taking advice from that guy. :)

The manufacturer of the submersible Aquatop indicates on their home page these are not meant to run 24/7....only a few hours per day. Anyone else have any info on how long one should run their UV?

UV's are extremely effective. Case and point: delicate marine fish like angels, butterflies, and tangs difficult to keep because of disease. Their scales don't overlap, thus exposing part of the epidermis. The sterilizer lowers the pathogen ( viruses, bacteria, protozoa) count so the likelihood of the fish getting sick is lowered. The bulb doesn't kill these things automatically while in the tube. It irradiates them and literally sterilizes them, since they can no longer reproduce these pathogens die slowly. It generally takes a couple months for the uv to take full effect but they are undoubtedly effective. However effective UV's are, they are only part of the disease prevention equation. A varied, nutritous diet and immuno- stimulant supplements are a big part as well. High quality pellets soaked in vitamin C and amino acids along with anti-oxidants like garlic or astaxanthin( antioxidant and color enhancer) is another part. The best cure for any disease is aggressive prevention from both the outside and inside of the fish. The most important part of the UV is getting one that is right for the tank. Most of the time you get what you pay for so don't cheap out. Odds are if theyre cheap, theres a reason. I couldn't possibly deny that UV's are effective.

just some feed back..................

i have had a UV sterilizer installed for 13 days now... I have a pair of p14, leo, and a leohen in this tank. i have had the p14 a little over a year now.

i was told that it is normal for p14's to breathe heavy after feeding them. I have noticed this for the year+ i have had them.... since i have added this UV, i have not noticed them breathing heavy at all not once! Coincidence? I don't seem to think it is, after nearly two weeks they seem very active and never breathing heavy.
Some of the guys that are breeding rays like rabbits, what do they have in common? Many of these guys that i have talked with are running UV's.

With rays, i am starting to think it is more than a luxury item.

Bio media seems to also be pretty similar across the board......

So can you elaborate on the breathing? Maybe the UV helps with oxygen content so much that maybe there's no longer as big of a ammonia spike after feeding????? what do you think might be going on?
