Is a 10g good for breeding convicts?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are a thousand healthier options: pellets, prawns, fish fillets, shrimps, frozen cubes, etc. They all make life easier both for the fk and the health of the fish. If you have a few months to get them going and grow then by all means, but a pellet is 10x healthier imo....not to mention ridiculously simple..

I wish my backyard was rich with critters. Yeah thinking in the long run, maybe it might be worth it breeding... It's not like the fry can grow successfully with the parents in the same tank or am I wrong?

Parents will eat the fry at some point. A few may make it but you wont be able to grow out the fry in the same tank

i'm currently breeding mine in a 10 gallon. i just dump the fry into another 10 gallon and then dump them straight into my piranha tank when i have a new batch to move into the second 10 gallon. if i were starting all over, i'd probably use a 20 gallon instead though

When you throw the fry into your tank once the new batch hatches, how big are they? Are they still really small? like 2-6mm?

I just setup a 29 gallon tank for a male and female convict. I agree with most stuff said here. Dad will probably beat up mom, the parents will eat the fry when they spawn the next group, and convicts take a while to grow. I see no issue with feeding live, as long as you raised them in clean water, treated for parasites and disease, and gut load them with good food before tossing them in. Just dont be like petco and raise 100 convicts in a 10 gallon tank. That kinda crowding and tank size will definitely give you water issues and high stress, leading to the fish being more susceptible to disease and parasites.

It does come down to each keeper though.

10g is too small to breed, let alone grow out baby convicts.

I'd look into culturing red wiggler worms (google it). Really simple and a great, safe food.

A couple members did it with a 10 gallon right above u, read first! However u need a seperate tank for fry.
