CREATING THE ULTIMATE FILTRATION AND EVOLVING WITH YOUR FISH!!!!!!

And thats catching the particuate waste and giving you clear water? Awesome. Would certainly make things easier [for my design] if it was a simple closed loop rather than needing a sump and pre-filter and then the ultima. I've been looking into the cost with shipping from the US and if I still need to set up a sump and pre-filter its not really worth it, but if it could be the sole form of filtration then it may be viable...
with Bead filters if your fussy about water clarity you definatly need some sort of pre filter on the other hand the glass filter i use is both Bio and mechanical and definatly polishes water !!!

Going thru reading this from the begining, Huron, bro your crazy .....in a good way:D. Your verbage and use of exclamation points has me smiling. I bet your a fun dude, I feel silly commenting with my smaller size tank and lower level filtration.....But as you stated earlier it will grow with my fish:screwy:

Db I agree 100% with pre ageing , wish I.had a 250 gal container. I'm using 2 55 gal containers and I never have enough fresh water to satisfy my wc desires. My smaller containers get to room temp within the ageing process, room is tropical hot from all the tanks. You stated that you add the water cold. I'm planning on moving my room to the basement and was concerned about heating the ageing bins wich will be in an unfinished portion. Are you doing small% @ each wc? I was thinking drip from the containers to get around heating

My entire tank/filter is in an unfinished portion of the basement. There's no ducts in there whatsoever and there's a porch above it.

The rays seem to like the cold water. It's not much colder then their tank water.

I try to do a water change at least every other day, if not daily. I use all 250 gallons when doing these water changes.

Yes, it will catch/trap waste and debris. As long as you backwash the filter at certain time (depend on your stock, which you can determine within 2-3 weeks from observing your water clarity), you can maintain clear water. I haven't experienced with the glass media, but from seeing Ken and Hulon fish, I have no doubt that glass is a better version of bead. It's better you do a close loop, rather than sump to Ultima. When you do close loop, you can drain your tank during water change, and use the same water to backwash the filter. You can drain your tank very quickly, too.

Interesting, how big is your tank and how do you heat it, if already posted size sorry I'm still about half way through reading from the begining. I have an old dark room (only finished room in my bsmt) I was going to make it a heated fitration room with the tanks external in unfinished area. I am concerned about keeping the water heating in the winter.

Sorry just realized I spelled your I'd wrong Hulon!

Tank is 750. Sump is probably 250-300. Last year I just used normal heaters along with a warm water drip. Had no trouble keeping temp with like 1500 watts worth of normal heaters.

Not sure what I'll do this winter..... Either tie into the water heater, get a big inline heater, or some smaller titaniums off a controller......

Glass filter certainly seems like the way to go, its just the $$$$$.....

I don't know David $500 dollers for a 16 chamber filter and a heavy duty 7 way valve with media is not that bad at all ..To put it in perspective and Fx-5 is $350 retail and ya sometimes you can get 1 on Ebay cheaper .Granted the Glass filter needs a pump also..

I love this thread!
A glass filter is at the top of my wish list for fish tank upgrades.
THanks Hulon and Ken for all the time you guys are spending educating all of us.

Ultima is one brand of bead filter. I have two 4000 model that I'm using, and one 2000 model that has been collecting dust, and will be put in service soon. I like them a lot. They're similar to pool sand filter, except the media is plastic beads, don't need to be replaced periodically like sand. It has multi-port valve, can be backwash, or flush by turning the valves to the port accordingly. The filter is combination of mechanical/biological. I've known a few people with big or messy fish (one with 8 super size AUL) who use Ultima, and it all work out for them
