I'm lucky that my husband is fairly supportive of my fish craziness. He actually encouraged me to buy a 100.00 fish, when I wasn't sure I could afford it. Up until we considered the weight on my floor, he was telling me to upgrade to a 125. In return, I had to give up my 30 to him and support his interests as well. He takes some interest in taking care of my big tank. We indulge our hobbies as long as it doesn't mess us up financially. I feel blessed to have an other half that kind of understands.

In convincing your other half, maybe the fact that your fish are outgrowing the space they are in and how pretty they would be in the larger tank.

+1 for my living arrangement. /If/ it actually came down to it, I could pull that card (as sugarmama) when it comes to the discretionary money left over after bills and savings. It has never gotten to that point, since my fiance has simple tastes and doesn't gold-dig or demand that the money be spent how HE wants. We are respectful of each others' hobbies, and that is the most important part of deciding how leftover money gets spent. My advice would be to sit down and discuss how much of that extra spending money your household gets per month, and what things that money is going to (eating out, partying, fish stuff, things for her, saving up for a trip, etc.) There will be MANY MANY THINGS that want to gobble up that money, and if you and she are not on the same page about what gets priority, you both will be miserable. Priorities and interests will change, so it's a good idea to sit and talk about it every few months.

PS: What are your intentions for the 4' tank once you get the 6'? Will you be replacing it or adding it? I suspect that if you recoup some of the cost by selling off the 4', there will be much less wrath.

I will sell it along with a 65g and all the components. The tank Im looking at has EVERYTHING. I can sell everything I have. Theres recouping a few dollars. I am firefighter and I fell thru a floor several years ago. I have a pretty badly banged up back. Anyway, my case settled. So, the finances arent really a problem. Its the room and having the tank fit in.

I had a spot in our living room already picked out and she didn't want to hear the details... so when I said 96x30x24 it didn't really register. Once the tank was purchased and you could see how large it was, there was some shock. Kinda playing the easier to forgive than ask permission, even though I did tell her the details up front.

I did the tank up as a nice show tank so now it's not a problem. She sees how much our kids enjoy it, that helps a lot.

I am probably one of the most blessed ppl in the world :-) HE bought my first upgrade for Christmas (I chose it), & later picked up my baby O from another mfker.. seeing the sellers' adults was his first real understanding of how big mine would get (I already told him & showed pics, but he pays as much attention as any other man ;-)
I had to put O in a small tank, husband started feeding him crickets= sparking his interest.
but he's always fully supportive. goes out of his way to pick up my 'whatevers' on his way home from his work trips!

I don't really recommend the get it & ask forgiveness thing. a healthy/happy marriage is first. and becomes more support in the long run.
Since your wife is so decorative, I'd show some pics of beautiful tanks which you could create around your chosen stock. why not include her interests rather than alienate your life partner? and include some stock with eye appeal, not only swamp things with fangs. a really nice tank could add more beauty to a room than ANYthing, and with enough compliments, she will be won over.

We've been married for decades & he did NOT start out this supportive of differing interests. :-o
I could share more indepth by pm, if you wish.
Husband is my best friend on earth.

I really appreciate your sentiment. Ive actually found a ton of support thru this site on this upgrade. Im sure she'll be cool with it. Just have to find a decent home for it. After all I have the money and the time. I'll encourage her to help me decorate it. She does love my current livestock and set up. Ill keep everyone posted tonight after we talk about makin the trip to pick it up. A 220g with everything...EVERYTHING!
