9" Texas Cichlid Tankmate Help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ur repeating what others have already said and he's not asking for an ID.

He didn't, but in this context it's necessary to offer a proper ID, to perhaps explain why this 'texas' is so aggressive, enough to take on well, anything.

And so yes, imo doesn't look like a texas either.

Looks like a texas x Paraneetroplus/Paratheraps/Vieja, which could explain its aggression. Texans are known for their aggression, but never have I heard them being this aggressive.

Don't really know what suggestion to offer though, the thing looks like a beast, probably won't work with a lot of different cichlids. Keep it as a single wet pet? :P

Agreed, ID is beneficial but I'd assume there is more aggression coming from the Texas side than the Syn(which is what I thought too). Just my experience.
Op, how about giving him a female? He might be cool with a mate introduced through a divider.

Agree, which is odd because it seems like a Syn x too. However, since it's a x, it may be some of the other species, perhaps one of the really aggressive ones. Hm...

now i know this as stated is not a request for anyones ideas on what this fish is at all...
but i do feel i have a point to put across

This "texas' does look to have some vieja blood in it, now we do see viejas as those fish that are not bad, but we also forget when male (or female) viejas get big enough they will be able to take down anything and everything that they want to. It appears to have a blue base, but then again i do not claim to know exactly what this fish is crossed with.

Really all i can say is good luck with tank mates... i have owned countless fish from the paraneetroplus group and once they are solitary they stay like that...

looks like you have a nice show fish though!

He looks pretty stout for 9 inches and I'd say he packs quite the punch. As for tankmates, I would try to go with something very similar in size or much smaller. If it is closer in size it may be able to hold it's ground and if it is smaller, maybe your fish wouldn't see it as a threat (this is where I've had the most success with my own fish). Either way, I would recommend removing your fish for one to two weeks while the other fish claims territory and then reintroducing him to the tank. On a separate note, I think that your fish looks great and I would love to see a few more pictures of him if you have them. Best of luck to you. -J

Thanks for all the help (and possible ID) guys. Maybe the mix does explain his aggresion. He attacks the syphon and my hand when I clean the tank. And he likes to fight his reflextion a few times a day as well. I guess I may be keeping him as a "wet pet." Last question, what about going none cichlid and trying to introduce a school of clown loaches or siver dollars? Thanks again!

You need to add same size or bigger fish. I know it may be hard to find but it is only way. Remove your texas from the tank and re arrange decor if you have any. Add new fish than your texas again. Should help with aggression. Good luck.

I like the update pics....gives a better view of your fish...very nice and in mint condition..i may not be the best to give advice on this one because i have a lone male midas in a 150 .The tank is in our family room and the hovers tank center most of the time and follows particularly myself as i move in or out of the room...he is around 13 inches and i can notsee another fish (cichlid) being in with him...i think your own idea of perhaps silver dollars or maybe some bottom dwelling fish might work...you have a fish without a mark on him...maybe you can build
