Gold juvies tend to stay pale for a long time. Some even stay that way into adulthood, showing a creamy white or beige body with yellow anal fins. Other lines will be more butter-yellow with red anal fins and the males will develop red markings on the face and body. It's hard to say by looking at fish that small how they'll end up. If you feed foods high in astaxanthin it will bring out what natural yellow/orange/red pigments they do have. I wouldn't expect them to start coloring up until 4"+ though. That goes with any severum.
Thanx. Severums are what got me into cichlids in the first place. How long did it take yours to grow out?

I bought them in April and they were about 1 inch in size. I originally had them in a 29 gallon for a couple of months while I made changes to my 180. The first month or two, the growth seemed slow, but started to pick up after that. They've been in the 180 the last two months and they seem to be growing fairly quickly now. They are about 4 and 5 inches respectively. They started lip-locking about a month ago and I had eggs on my bulkhead a day or two later. They wound up eating the eggs on day three, but it was pretty cool to see. The female chased any strangers that came close.
I really like them and wish I started keeping them sooner.
Here's a recent pic.
