Best gun for home defense?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes they where. Of course one is a wiki, lol.

They also ignored alot of rounds in the last article. Was actually very supprising.

I think it's an older article. There was a note about it being updated recently, but I don't think the editor updated the whole thing.

Heh, I just edited that post. Yeah I saw that. They skipped all LEO only loads, despite them being regularly available to civiys. Some ( Ranger Bonded 130-gr. .38 Special +P) are better than most.on the market.

See below

RA38B (130-gr. Bonded Ranger .38 Special +P from a S&W Model 60, 2" barrel):

Muzzle velocity: 835 fps Bare Gel: 12.2" penetration, .62" expansion, 100% retained weight. Heavy clothing: 12.4" penetration, .63" expansion, 100% retained weight. Wallboard: 13.4" penetration, .56" expansion, 100% retained weight. Plywood: 14.2" penetration, .41" expansion, 100% retained weight. Steel:11.3" penetration, .53" expansion, 100% retained weight. Auto Glass: 10.5" penetration, .51" expansion, 85% retained weight (110.5 gr.)

For a 38spl, daaaaannnnngggg

Don't give a girl a handgun.

Really? It's 2012. I'd think you'd figure out that gender has nothing to do with what guns you can handle by now.:swear: If not I will point you towards the US Army Military Police where every single female has demonstrated proficiency with a full size handgun.

Replace "girl" with "new shooter" and that statement makes sense.

If it's the only gun in the home and you figure on her ever going to the range consistently I'd suggest a handgun because shotguns are a pain to take to most ranges.

If it's the only gun in the home and you know she has no plans to go the range beyond learning to operate the gun I'd get a shotgun. They're the better for pure home defense.

If you really want to set her up for success get her a shotgun and a .22lr handgun/rifle. .22lr is way too much fun to shoot and will get her more comfortable with firearms in general. 10/22s can be had for pretty cheap and are reliable.

The fact that 9mm is an ineffective killer is why we teach soldiers to shoot the enemy twice in the chest and once in the head, as I alluded to in my other post.

No you don't teach soldiers that. At least you better not get caught teaching that. Center mass, center mass, center mass. I know Army doctrine too. Enough to throw it out the window.

MP's in the US use hollow points now for a reason. We yelled about over penetration long and loud enough that they finally changed.

Sorry sister, we do. It's sop for MPs for the M9. Also, where are we using hollowpoints? I've been an MP for seven years now and I've never carried a hollowpoint.

For what it is worth... I do not use JHPs either.. The pistol I use most the CZ-52 or TT-33 (M-57) will not function reliably with them and in many ways defeats the reason I carry the pistol in the first place. Superb penetration.... While the 7.62x25 is not a knock down killer, the same techniques of two in chest and one in head however is more than enough to dispatch any would be attacker.. (except in our training it is Three in chest then head in the East) And if your behind a soft wall or door or in a car I'm still going to get you with a kill shot.. While this throws off many of the so called "SD" people whom whine over and over about over-penetration, what they often miss when choosing a pistol or particular cartridge for that pistol is FUNCTIONal usage, level of TRAINING on that firearm, ENVIRONMENT in which hostility is prevalent and the TACTICal know how to employ weapons systems effectively. More often than not it always sounds like I'm talking with Bookworms or Computer warriors when discussing SD weapons and Ammunition on the internets rather than experienced Shooters that know their tools and how to employ them with effective results...

I use an AKMS for my in house for SD also.. This loaded with 3 Frangible rounds and then it is Steel core FMJ or M67 combat rounds for the rest of the Magazine... Why? again for the same reason as above... I have thousands of hours trigger time on this gun.. I know how to use it effectively and I know the ballistic characteristics of the cartridges I use in the gun I use them in. For me an AKM is far more familiar than lets say a Mossburg or whatever shotgun (well OK except for my Saiga-12).. This makes good use of training and experience in a stressed situation.

Just my 2 Kopeks... and certainly should not be taken as general advice to those that are novices with Firearms or their employment... For you... you need appropriate training on the firearm you choose.

The real reason is that it was cheaper. NATO standardization was just a handy excuse. :)
9mm is no cheaper than the 40 million plus rounds of service 45ACP that the US currently have already in surplus..Keep in mind that until the M9 the US had no 9mm service pistol or SMG for that matter out side of Spec-ops. In fact it cost the US more to change to the M9 than to just have held on to the 1911.. The NATO standardization was the key reason to retire the .45...

Keep in mind also that .45ACP was manufactured and sold to the Military up until about 1990.. Cost had nothing to do with it.. Hell when has cost ever been a factor to the Military? When you use a 100,000 dollar rocket, A 130 million dollar warplane and 2,000 dollars of airfuel to hit one guy with a bolt action rifle on a mountain.. Ya really think the 2 cent cost difference between .45 or 9mm is burning them up?
