Those with multiple tanks, how do you handle your water changes?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm running two tanks right now, a 55 and a 150. I do my water changes on both at the same time. I did get creative with my plumbing to make it much easier though.

what did you do?

5 tanks running, do waterchangess every 5 days per tank. Try to do at least 2 tanks on the same night, left overs the next day, then about 2-3 days rest before another waterchange. I try to balance it out, while giving myself some rest, multiple waterchanges on large tanks gets very tireing lol good exercise though.

I built that contraption. It makes water changes on the big tank plug and play. I also have a 30' clear one inch ID hose that has normal 3/4" garden hose female ends on either end. I could have used a normal hose but I wanted to be able to see what was happening.

When my contraption is configured like it is in the picture, the FX5 flows through like normal. If I was to plug in my hose and turn off the leftmost valve and open the one pointing down, the FX5 will pump water out of the tank into the sink drain. When I'm done pumping water out, I'll shut off the FX5, close the right valve, keep the down one open and open the left. I then take the end of the hose out of the drain and screw it onto the water faucet and put water into the tank. The tank fills itself from the FX5's outlet. When I'm done I plug the FX5 back in and things are honky dory. This setup makes it extremely easy to prime my hose if I want to vacuum the tank too. All I have to do is turn some valves and attach and detach the hose.

The little tank is in an alcove right above the sink. Doing water changes on that tank are incredibly easy, I didn't need to rig anything special up.

To fill my tanks I use big water cooler jugs with some long plastic hardware hose I found in the garage lol add some prime when I'm done and presto.

At my peak I was running 50 tanks for 10s to 180s. I used a python into utility sinks to vacuum and draw down and filled from two 110 gal tanks of RO. Had to do them a bank at a time based on how much RO I had.

125 2 55s and a 29 all get wc on the same day with good ol siphon in a sink once a week 60-80% wc on each except 125 might get twice a week because of over stock. To drain and fill takes about 3 hours. I have yet to find a more efficient wY to do this.
