Unfaded RT x SB Tex(?)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Save me a sb! They look good nice job growing them so far.

No problem! I'll let you know when they are ready. I'm just going to wait until after the holidays.

Whats your feeding and WC schedule? Im raising some fry for the first time and Im not getting growth like you.

2-3 50% water changes per week. I feed at least once but usually twice a day. I feed NLS but I give them frozen foods and chopped spinach a couple days a week as treats. How old are your fry?

Are you keeping any of the faded ones to breed back to the unfaded dad?

I don't have the Dad any longer. I'm going to breed a fader back to the sister of the father (unfaded also from cjbarth). She has nicer blue pearls.

Awesome update
The short body ones look like balloons

Thanks! They really do. They are the hungriest little buggers too. I love short bodys! :)

My texas x green texas fry are 3 weeks and convicts are 6 weeks old.

I fed mine mostly crushed NLS, crumbled boiled egg yolk and emerald entree when they were young. I think the egg yolk made them grow the most. If you do the egg yolk, make sure you feed a little at a time so it doesn't spoil the water.

Thanks for the advice. I ended up using most as feeders so I can free up their tank to start my own RT project.

Any new pics?

Whats up man. I've been checking this thread a lot lately trying to compare your fry's growth compared to mine and I think they're about the same. I noticed I have at least 6 that dont have the flowerline but they do have the 3 spots along that their lateral line. They are also smaller than most of their siblings. I was wondering if you noticed the same with your fry and possibly have any predictions of how they'll turn out. I hate waiting. Lol. Also could you tell if you had any shortbodies at the 3/4 week mark?

Hey, I need to take some more pics!!

I did notice that there were SBs at the 3/4 week mark. They look almost normal but hella fat! Actually, some of the SBs I have are the fastest growers and most aggressive. I have a theory as to why that is BTW. It goes like this:

Although the SB fish may not be the fastest (which is why they probably don't survive in the wild very often), I think they are able to compete or out-compete in a home aquaria because they win in jaw-locking fights for dominance with other fish. My SB fish seem to win most of the fights because I think the shorter body makes them more powerful in the close quarter fights that cichlids get into. You ever notice how shorter people have a stronger center of gravity or how bulldogs are so powerful? Dominant fish will usually get more food which leads to greater growth, blah blah blah. Again, it's just my theory....

I'm really interested to see how yours turn out though. I haven't seen any other threads about breeding unfaded RT w/unfaded RT.

Yes you do! And so do I but I don't have a real camera. The fry move way too much for my phone's camera.

Looks like I don't have any SB's in my batch. Your SB theory makes sense. It'd be harder to move a short stockier object vs a longer skinnier one.

Mine is actually unfaded male RT x female green texas so my hopes aren't high about the fry. I'm still very interested to see how they turn out though. They'll be 3/4 carpintis and 1/4 BP so we'll see how strong the fader gene is.

Do you have any idea on how the fry with no flowerline might turn out? At the moment that's the only different group I see.
