This is my freshwater goby. Ive had him 6ish months. I believe i got him somewhere between September to October from a fellow hobbyist and craigslister in Milpitas who specializes in breeding discus and importing wild caught rare fish. With an emphasis on rare and for dirt cheap prices too. These gobies were 4$ a piece. His discus are 10$ a piece. He is more into peaceful, non-predatory planted tank fish though, not your typical bichirs or dats and stuff. Anyways, back to the gobies, they have quickly become a favorite of mine. Their is a strict heirarchy, like in female bettas and the alpha male will chase any other goby in sight. The alpha male will always have the best colouring. The alpha male has 2 red streaks across his cheeks like you see in football fans. The edges of his fins, particularly the dorsal and caudal are outlined in yellow. They are best kept individually except in larg-ish tanks. Some alpha males will tolerate other gobies although chasing is going to happen regardless. Females have a mottled coloration while males have a smooth cream color. Pic of a female included for referance. Her head is not in the pic.
i watched a documentary on how a japanese village lived in harmony with their surroundings and there was a part about the small goby in japans streams, always had a soft spot for them since.
