Most effective dither fish

The term dither fish is often confused by many people. Dither fish need to be specific to the species they are for. Most people think dithers are targets for aggression, which by definition they are not.

They may also serve as a "target" for the displacement of aggressive behavior between a potential breeding pair.

The first half of this definiton is somewhat correct, if "other" pretains to timid. The second half is not.

This defintion is correct.

Two differnt things, dither fish and target fish. You don't need dithers for a large, bold aggressive cichlid. but you may want to add some target fish to spread aggression.

No, it's correct. They are used to reassure or soothe other fish. This can sometimes lead to them being targeted. But that doesn't stop them from reassuring/soothing other fish lol. It's not mutually exclusive.
