Thx for the feedback; nice photo. Ospreys making a comeback here on east coast...never saw one until about 20 yrs ago, now they can even be found within NYC limits,; I often see them while fishing, and they always are far mmore successful than I! Do they get into central Texas? best, Frank

Cool, they are one of my favorite birds.

I actually took the picture so, yes, I'd say they are getting along down here. This one was actually my fishing buddy. If I saw it out, I would catch fish.

Edit, here are two more pics, (same day same bird) cropped down for avatar dimensions.

Mine too, so impressive, no matter how often I see them; NY now 16F, so the photos are a nice reminder of the season to come, thanks. Interesting how far inland they are comming now, were limited to coast here, when they first began making a comeback, enjoy, Frank

In years past, they were called "Toe Biters" by many people. A biologist friend in Louisiana works with huge spiders, gators, etc, but worries most about giant water bugs, very painful bite..

Yep, piercing mouth parts are what separate the group from other hemipterans. One of my professors would call the smaller ones (belostomatidae) cuss bugs because if you got bit you'd say some colorful words. Never seen a big one bite but I don't try either. lol

"Cuss bogs"...good one! In Venezuela, while working with anacondas for the Bx Zoo, I collected Lethocerus maximus, a relative on the NA species, and the world's lagest aqutic insect. Never saw anyone bitten, but had one up my pants leg - thought it was a small turtle at first! Still kicking myself for not getting permits, I've not seen them in any collections here, but 1 zoo in Japan may have them. Some photos: http://bit.ly/11jVRcP http://bit.ly/W1NFbO

Best, frank

Cuss bugs... Awesome.

Here's a practical question for my aquarium: Can I feed it to my pacu like I do spiders? I don't find spiders for him. He eats them and I find legs and carapace from time to time. If we had roaches, I'd see those too probably. Not sure why he doesn't eat all of them like he does grasshoppers.

Not much to them, in the way of "meat", but he might accept. My sunnies and cichlids love moths, beetles, beetle grubs, smooth caterpillars and grasshoppers; strangely, the sunfish do not go crazy over earthworms, but many other fish take them in preference all else. Small shrimp/prawn ("people grade") also relished by all, Best, Frank

Ya, we've had slugs everywher lately but I wasn't sure if it would be a waste of my time. Just getting them off the sidewalk would probably kill them so it'd be a mess if they didn't get eaten.
