Tarantula beginner - what should I get?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry, but one more question. What temp do you keep yours at? Caresheets I read said to keep them in the mid to upper 70s, but I also read a general tidbit about tarantulas that said they can be fine at slightly lower temps as compared to their natural habitat. The bulb I an using right now is just keeping the tank at 70, but I have some good humidity going.

they are pretty good with warying temps, just keep it in the 70s

Did she find them? Lol. How is she doing anyway?

I can't see them anywhere, so I think she did! I put a large cricket in there last night and found her munching on it this morning. She seems to be doing pretty good.

Sweet, you should post some feeding pics :D

Tank is pretty dark and she's kinda hard to see because she hangs out on the black background, but I'll do my best!

Beautiful enclosure, albeit total overkill for an avic (I keep adults in an 8x8x12...they would be perfectly fine in a vertical 2.5 gallon). Avics are known for webbing the very top of their enclosures, so it's likely that she won't use that hide on the bottom (not that it's bad to have, though...a few of my younger ones use terrestrial hides). This can make it tricky to access the tank if it has top-only access, but it looks like that particular top is hinged in the middle so you probably won't have any problems.

Avicularia are awesome beginner tarantulas. The worst you really have to worry about with them is their propensity for projectile defecation (enjoy cleaning that glass, lol). They thrive at room temp and higher humidity.

Do they try and escape a lot? I have the tank pretty well covered, but there are some really small gaps that concern me.

I wouldn't say they "try" to escape so much as they would if they're in the right place at the right time. I'd seal those holes.

How often do they molt?

As juveniles, every few weeks. As adults, probably every 6+ months. The time between molts increases with age.

The little info I found on the Web says that you need to look at the molt in order to sex these. Any input on that? Hopefully I lucked out and got a female.

When it molts, if you can, try and remove the exuvia as soon as possible -- the fresher, the better. Spread it out, get some tweezers, and gently unfold the scrunched up piece that was the opithosoma (abdomen). In between the first two book lungs, you're looking for a small "flap," called the spermathecae. If it's present, you have a female. If not, it's male. It's likely that you're going to have to do some research first to know what you're looking for, so do some googling. Once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for all the input! I know it's "overkill", but this tank was already set up and was empty for a while since I sold my crestie. I wanted a tarantula, so this animal in this setup is what I ended up with.

Oh, I know. Nothing wrong with having a nice display tank! Once she webs up an area, though, she'll rarely leave it. I recommend putting prey directly in her web, otherwise I'm not sure she'll ever find it.

I'm looking forward to her making a web. I did move that hide off of the ground a week ago. It's propped up vertically now. She has recently changed where she hangs out, so it will be interesting to see where she makes a web.

If you set up a vertical hide, chances are she'll shack up in there. That's usually how it goes in my experience. How large is she, btw?

I just rearranged the tank more and I think made it even more suitable for her. I will post a pic tonight. I'm guessing she's about 3.5 inches diagonally leg to leg.
