moving a tank need help/advice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Can't upgrade 1- too poor 2- new place isn't big enough hahaha

So what if I added the sand after washing it after the tank been up for a week ? Or how long should I wait before adding it ??

Im not trying to be mean here, but what are your plans once your fish outgrow your current setup? Since the fish you listed all grow quite large and a 140G doesnt seem like it will hold all of them long term...

It all depends on how much sand you have in your tank if you only use a quarter inch of sand for substrate then you'll be fine and you wouldn't even have to remove it but if your tank has more than a quarter inch then it should be discarded or a least thoroughly cleaned.

Yes I have a friend that has a HUGE tank that constantly bugging me to sell almost every fish I have here hahaha

Maybe I'll rinse the sand really well and add it after a week or so ? No even sure if I'm going to get the tank into my apartment here with the way it is setup :(

Lots of suction cups and beers, then call a bunch of friends, being sure to say free beer... once they get there ask for their help then offer the beer

Your only moving an hour away. Dont rinse or toss out your substrate. Its one of your largest bio bacteria resources. It needs to be kept wet. With tank water.

In 38 plus years of experience in the aquatic hobby I've moved more tanks then I would have ever thought. Not just mine but I was always the guy people called to help.

Fish tank should be the last thing to tear down and move but the first thing to set up. Your substrate will be fine as long as its wet for 3 or 4 hours. No different then if your power went off for that long. Yes you may stir some stuff up but nothing that should be an issue. Use 30% of your tank water and its basically like doing a large water change. If you rinse your substrate use old tank water. Its not that big of a deal to move tanks. I've normally been able to move and set them up same day with my livestock back in the tank no losses. Just make sure temps are good as well. Its easy.

See that's what I was thinking as well.... I guess I have a 55g drum (plastic I could hold full of water in back of truck maybe ? Otherwise I'm not sure what I can use to hold old water well enough to make a difference lol.....

I'm more worried about not being able to get my tank down the concrete stairs in my door way haha was hard enough getting a queen size box spring through... It a basement apartment, and yes I'm basically all moved into my new place last thing to come here is my fish tank now, basically I think is what I'd have to do is carry the tank down the steps (10steps maybe) and stand the tank up on it end then tilt it in from top first the opening and area were my door is about 3-4ft wide MAX

I'm just lost on the idea why your dead set against keeping your sand? PFS is super cheap. I'd possibly keep a 5gal bucket of tank sand & replace with new.

So you think he should change his substrate out?

I just think it silly to throw out perfectly good sand ? This hobby is expensive enough lol and if I can spare myself a few dollars to re-use my old stuff why not right ?
