P. brachyura - anyone lucky enough to have one?

No matter what size tank we have it will always end up over stocked at some point

The bigger the tank the faster the fish will grow

Some of the rays mentioned shouldn't be for sale in the hobby

Even fish like alligator gars arapima African tiger fish shouldn't be sold
Even red tail cats are only the boarder line of being to big
But its the adult size that turns people on with these fish but how many ever reach adult size in a aquarium I haven't seen many

All this I will buy a bigger tank when needed is rubbish as most of the people who buy the above mentioned fish have no intention of building a 3k tank to house them

Thanks for being very rational sbuse! Much appreciated...thanks others for some types of rays to check out. To everyone else who is calling bs on my ability to house larger fish i will simply just smile and shake my head. I currently have 28 tanks and over 4000 gal operational atm. and as a professional fabricator i have the ability to build anything i could possibly ever want or need for this hobby. I keep very few fish (2-8) even single specimen in 200-1700gal tanks unlike most who stock the crap outta them. I appreciate my fish and truely strive to give them the best lives possible. Haters will hate....drives me even more to create this is my life and i dont intend to stop any time soon. So flame away, i have my fire suit on haha.... ive visited many zoos that have smaller setups and fish than i do. Bigger tanks do not always mean more fish to pack in, im a very responsible keeper. I simply love and live for this hobby just like the rest of us. I feel i was very realistic when i asked if there was anything comparable to the species i opened the post with. Sorry some of u will only ever own a 125-180gal and have to attack people who actually have the means to care for multiple monster fish in the 3'-6' range with no problem. Keep dreamin haters...i laugh at ur ignorance. U cant forget our forefathers who have tanks larger than most peoples homes...im not too far behind them. My appologies for the rant to everyone who gave me vaild responses. I appreciate you sharing info.

Thankyou calgaryflames for solid information and kind words! Ill look into the species uve suggested. I am also farmiliar with insane bio loads and filtration as most of my stock is in the 24"-36" range.

T1karman...u are correct in that most people do not have the means to house the species u listed. I completly agree. But there are also alot of us who do. Whats ur largest tank?

Agreed not many, but we try, some better than others. Everybodys gotta start somewhere. It is the people who think a 180 can house a 3'-4' fish properly where lies the problem not the ones who accept they need the largest enclosures we can provide.

Well my tank is setup and run like a normal community tank just bigger

When people go into a LFS to buy the above mentioned fish the guy in the shop normally says they get big and need a big tank the normal reply they get is

Well I have a 150g but I will get a bigger tank when needed

If that happened for every large fish sold then the earth would be covered in more water than it is now with all the 3000g+ tanks

I feel another heated argument coming from T1 and it's really getting off topic.

Please get back on topic about big rays.

We have local keepers here that keep big fish as well as big species of everything else. In the case of this ray, I'd say only capable keeper will bring them in considering the capacity needed for it as well as the legal implications considering this is a protected species.

If you have the knowledge, capacity and the passion then why not keep one, but if the ray won't be secure in the long run then I hope they just don't.

when the largest international zoos and aquariums think twice and decline Brachyura due to their size, perhaps the suggestion is a good one?
perhaps one can grow an oak tree in a thimble as well?
