Great Barracuda - Ethical treatment question

Releasing it is a horrible idea considering pathogens it may have encountered in the lfs/trade...possibly illegal to do so, on top of bring unethical
I always wondered if the "dont release captive animals" applies to the ocean, too. A freshwater lake or river is a closed system, with a finite amount of space and other inhabitants, and it remains mostly the same day after day. The ocean is so vast as far as its volume and the number of organisms living in it, it may as well be infinite, and the conditions in an ocean change daily. It would seem that the chances of spreading pathogens in the ocean from one individual fish would be exponentially smaller than in a closed freshwater system, but who knows. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can chime in.
I don't think you should buy a fish for a tank you don't yet own. I know we have all done it, but it is never a good idea. You just dont know what tomorrow will bring. Cicumstances can change, life changes, you may not be able to build the 600. Then your stuck. Build first, stock later.
Also it is hard to say that no one in your area apart from you can care for him, do you know everyone? There are quiet fish keepers everywhere, people with amazing setups that simply dont come on MFK. Or go into the LFS, just keep themselves to themselves.
One other thing, and this is something I have done in the past, if you plan on keeping a specific trpe of fish in your new 600 and then you go out get sidetracked and buy something else, you will regret it. You may want to go back to your orginal choice, that may not be possible with an ocean predator in the tank. So in the end you will not get the tank you wanted, with the fish you wanted and this can lead to loosing interest which is never good for the fish you do have.
My 2 cents, leave it and let it be.

this was a bad idea to make this post in the first place
i know for a FACT i will have the plywood tank built in under 2 months ... already gathering supplies
and maybe doing a sw monster tank may not be that bad of a idea,instead of going mainstream and doing pbass and arows like everyone else i could do grouper which are bad ass lol
i don't need anyone's approval .. i will do what i want to ... i just wanted to get a feeler for how people could handle it if they "space" for it

First off, op stop getting so uptight. Now that that's been said, the answer to your question is no. Barracuda can grow to 7' in the wild and probably 4 or 6' in captivity. A 600 gallon tank is no where near the appropriate size tank for this fish. Period.

I think you should keep him until he is too big for you and then release him or take him to an aquarium.
Agreed. Wouldn't it be more merciful to just let the poor thing die than prolong its life in sub-par conditions?

Why not just contact an aquarium that can house them and see if they will take him now? We have great barracuda at or aquarium in a 500k tank. They do need a huge chunk of space. While they do hover in one spot here and there they do swim around quite a bit. I would also check the legalities behind this animal in your area before you do anything with it.
Dude they are lazy as hell I see them on the reefs yea there fast but they do sit in on spot alot and ambush near pilings of piers Jetties and on reef 4 ft probably as big as its gone to get they can if lucky get 6 ft not all the time though
