Umbee Update on move to larger aquarium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
IIRC your last pair of umbee with other fish in the 1000g it didn't end well. Are you going to do anything different this time, or eventually remove the other fish when the umbee get a bit bigger?

I've never kept the species (can't get them in NZ sadly/luckily) but have always admired them since first encountering them on Jef B's "Real Cichlids Don't Eat Quiche" page many many years ago as a young fish keeper. Hopefully this pair work out and can grow to a similar sort of size and stature as your dovii pair!

To wake up to a Mel vid is sign of a great day coming!

Your fish are incredible. You've done a fantastic job with all of them.

All the attitude in that tank make even that 1,000 gallon beast look smaller. Are you scared of any of them causing damage to each other?

Thanks for the video. :)

Wow!! Mel the Umbees are gorgeous, Wow!! The Chancho, Wow!! All of your cichlids wow!! Mel I didn't know that an Umbee especially a pair could or would share living quarters with other cichlids, will this work long term? I think it would really be nice if it would work :)

In a tank this size it should work. I kept a pair in this tank a few years back with Festae among other things and the Festae spawned regularly. A
Nasty disease wiped them all out and I started over slowly building up the population to where it is today. Most of the fish in this tank are Parachromis species and hang in the rock caves at the bottom while the Umbees tend to gravitate towards the open water in the middle section. It seems to be working, but if issues arise I will move fish out - already the Lyonsi have been removed. At the end of the day this tank was/is meant for the Umbees

I will move the others out if things do not work out long term. Man I have not thought about the old Real Cichlids site in along time. It brings back lots of memories. Jeff and I had lots of fun creating it.
