I went with what I tought was the safest most non-aggressive fish I could find and housed them with my bichirs. Now Im in danger of losing my endli :( I suck at this. Sorry Im new but Im really really interested in fish.

Last question, what can I house with my bichirs while they still have their external gills and could also possibly be long term tankmates? Thanks again.

Heres a pic of him before with his external gills all red and showing. Then below that is a (very bad) pic of him this morning. But I kinda see some red growing back. Awesome little fish. :)

Wow... I would of thought that a little guppy that would go near his face to chew on gills would be dinner... IME guppies are not very nippy at all...

Well my fish are just babies. Maybe that explains why they keep driving the guppies away cause they were nibbling on their externals. Sucks to be the guppies, now theyre with my gar

If you want something that won't pick at their gills I wouldn't recommend shrimp. I haven't tried regular ghost shrimp with them, but I know Amano shrimp will bother their gills.

If you want something that will be food later, I recommend zebra danios. They're cheap, active, and docile. Some smaller barbs or tetras (not tigers though) might work.

But if you want something more long term, we need to think about the size of an adult polypterus' mouth. Maybe something like tinfoil barbs or silver dollars. Other fish such as cichlids do well with adult polys, but those gills will be too tempting for them now.
