What are your favorite type of filters?

I personally like mixing all three...just now trying a sump and loving it for so many reasons...but I also have ac110s and canister filters..love the ac110s for providing current and canisters are great for tons of bio media. They all have pros and cons but I see no cons of using them together I'd you have the means :)

I'm a big fan of air-driven sponge and box filters - inexpensive, efficient and effective. Got ~50 tanks of them running!

I'm also a fan of DIY dump filters (basically a sump on the top of the tank) and traditional sumps.

HOBs are OK - simple and relatively easy to clean.

I'm not a fan of canisters - expensive, a PITA to clean and usually cleaned less frequently than they should be.

What do you guys recommend for large aquariums over 100 gallons? I too am one that doesn't enjoy the hassle of cleaning canisters so maybe a combo of hob filters and sponge filters? (I don't have a aquarium over 100 gallons but am just wondering what would be appropriate filtration without the hassle of cleaning a large canister or multiple canisters)

how much more than 100 gallons? hob's and cans (and sponge filters )will be fine for most "BIG" TANKS ... but if you are talking about 500 + gallons you probably want a sump:)

I like canisters I have 2 Fluval FX5s on my 120g that have been doing great. I just purchased a Eheim 2217 and really digging it on my 40g.
