Eelpout...how have i never heard of these guys before?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just got two YOY eelpouts today, both are around 4-5 inches long. They are in a bucket with aerator right now since they came from zebra mussel infested lake and want to clean out their digestive systems.

If Wes is, indeed, offering the true european eelpout, they'd make an awesome addition to a live-bearing fishes collection. Females gestate for about 5 months and give 'birth' to miniature replicas of the adults.

Nice work mnrebel! Gotta say im a bit jealous.. im sure being a dnr worker u could aquire the proper permits/paperwork to sell them and make a killing on here lol...not sure how all that works tho or if its even legal. Would you be able to sell captive born offspring with a permit similiar to snapping turtles? Or are the laws for fish completly different.

Nah too much paperwork and hassles with the laws related to selling Minnesotan natives

I figured that much, was just curious...ohio laws are very confusing on even just collecting natives in general. Ive diligently tried to be "by the book" about everything but ive never brought home anything other than my limit of top minnows or panfish to use as feeders.

All you need is an aquaculture permit and your set. I have looked into it. On your aquaculture permit if you can't get broodstock from the state they will give you a permit to collect brood stock. I'll be doing this once my lake is dug on my 40 acres I am getting. Pout are on the list of fish I'll be breeding. Not only will I sell some but I hear they are delicious.

My total list is going to be something like this.

Paddlefish
Lake sturgeon
Shovelnose sturgeon
Pout
Bowfin
Gars of a few sp.
With a few other surprises.
