Thinking of starting my own store

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think instead of opening a "store" why don't you just buy a storage space and setup lots of aquariums in there and get some contacts of people from some exporters and ask them for their stock list and just email the stock list to your potential customers and if you have enough orders to make you a profit order the fish. Thats what I would do.

I don't have a business background I do feel I have a good handle on what is needed for running it. And I do have contacts already at 3 distributors in the Chicago area and I do have people still asking for me at the petstore I worked at so I do have a client bace already

I'de probably drive from Milwaukee... I use to drive to Kenosha 10yrs ago or so to a guys basement lfs for oddballs.. problem is not many lfs a) know how to care for oddballs b) keep them in stock ... I get lucky in Milwaukee.. But you have to go check out stock 1x a week or so.. but that's pretty usual of oddballs...

that would sort of be my plan keep all the small community fish in stock but not make that the main part of the store because every lfs has it like that. i want it so i will have just a tun of different cichlids, cats, puffers, rays, gars and so on not have them good quality fish not just that cheapest ones i can get my hands on. i feel if people knew that the fish was an f1 or a wild caught that that does make it more valuable. i will also buy used equipment and buy fish from people whether it is because the fish got to big, to mean, or just want to change up. i would also like to set up a quarantine system that most stores don't have.

The first thing you should do is put together a business plan, including an analysis of competitors and whether potential locations would support an LFS. Just because there aren't any "good" stores doesn't mean that there's a demand for them!

Also, starting a business requires capital and the ability to survive without a paycheck from the business for some time. Prepared for that?

Matt

Im thinking of starting my own fish store in NE IL or SE WI. I want to see what everyone thinks about this. I feel like we don't have any good stores around me there's a few in northern Milwaukee and a few in Chicago but nothin in between I think we need it. Let me know what you think

In this economy, a fish store would be one of the last businesses to open. More local fish stores are closing than ever before. Tough business to show a profit.
