If it really indeed happened and not a made up story, then it is just a bear. I don't believe in superstitions about ghosts and demons. This is almost as bad as bigfoot and chupacabra.
We have very large bears in Japan. Some reach the size of a grizzly. Most of them live in northern Japan on Hokkaido. They are normally shy creatures. Sometimes accidents happen. And if one tasted human meat then you have a problem.
Ursus thibetanus japonicus reach a maximum size of around 120 KG while Ursus arctos horribilis reaches a size of 360 KG (individuals of the Kodiak subspecies have been reported to weigh up to 680 KG). Ursus americanus (the kind of bear we have around my house) reach about 250 KG.
Japanese bears do get big, but nowhere near as big as a Grizzly, or even an American Black Bear.
It did not imitate words. But human style voices and sounds. Thats unknown from bears till yet but well reported from Puma and Jaguars who imitate help cries from spider monkeys to lure the monkeys towards them:

of course it happened. That was 1916 and not thousand years ago. Newspapers reported about it in Japan. Several families were affected in various villages. The entire case escalated that much, that it was even brought to the emperor.
