Ive never kept one long term so im not exactly sure. Theyre the smallest of the bullheads though

The yellow bullheads are not smallest bullhead species since yellows, browns and blacks regularly reached more than 12" and a 14" yellow are not rare.

looks like a couple of problems. that right fin looks nasty. I'd expect the red spot to be a worm, or some other burrowing parasite. and is that a puncture by the anal fin?
that fish is having a bad day.

did you keep it?

Nah that fish isn't have a bad day, every bullheads I caught always have red spots, screwed up fins and some parasites but the bullheads don't care. After all they are super hardy against most diseases.

Yup. Although I'm sure there are hybrids swimming around, your normal yellow bullhead stays small. They're cute little pigs!

Not true! Yellows get larger, no different from blacks and browns.

Based on the lower whiskers being black, I'd call it a black bull head. :)

For reference, here are one of the tadpole madtoms I've caught that was considered a very old fish.

That's quite thickest tadpole madtom I ever seen, Longshot.

Yeah, I compared it to some stored samples and it was definitely the biggest out of all of them. It was confirmed by the director of aquatic resources at Texas State University, the guy who wrote the book for TX fish ID.

I've seen some ones that looks like yours but they are usually dying and floating. Never seen an old madtom that is still alive and eating.

Ok maybe I should re-phrase... The liklihood of you catching a yellow bullhead over 12" is far less than the liklihood of you catching a hundred 6-8 inchers.

I've caught THOUSANDS. Never seen one over a foot. Matter of fact I caught over 50 in one day and I think the lunker was 9". I have a brown that's done growing (except for his moose head) at 14".
