hi guys! was thinking about 1 dorado and 3 or 4 odoes in a 180. and maybe bala sharks? what do you think?

I've had both before on diff tanks. Both were terrorizing tank mates. Would it be ok to mix these 2 species?

Ive had both but no experience with mixing the two, but I don't think it would work out.

I have had them together in the past without issue and plan to again in the future.

Doubt the Balas will work unless they're quite a bit bigger, as they'll likely grow at a slower rate. A foot long Dorado makes a 180 look pretty small. If you're upgrading then no worries, if you're thinking 180 for life I'd be looking at some different species.

Dorados swim and Odoe like to just hang out calm so it's going to take a decent sized tank for them all to be happy.

Take my advice with a grain of salt, as my experiences seem to differ from the typical stereotype these fish have here. (Terrors)

Nice! Yeah i think i saw your vids.. You got some sweet fish!
I was thinkin balas or some other target fish just to spread aggression.. Was thinkin the 180 would aleast give me about a year and half if i get them small.. I was actually looking at a used 10x3 for my then 14" dorado and also 14" vittatus. Had them in separate 180s. But sadly i lost them both couple of months back. My tanks have been empty since.. And now looking for some new fish.. Any ideas?

Sorry for your loss. Those are 2 fish I'd be hell bent on replacing.

You'd have to dig pretty far back to see my Odoe and Dorado together. There was also a group of Armatus in there and I believe the Cynos too. Everyone was under 8" in a 300. Guessing 3+ years ago.

My experience with Odoes have been nothing but very passive fish. I have a group of 8 together now with a big Bala and there's never even nipped fins. Not sure why I sem to have different luck then everyone else. Maybe cause I get them really small and raise them all together in decent sized tanks, not really sure, but I've had Odoe 3 different times (group of 4 & 6) and I've never had an mean one. Therefore never have needed dithers or target fish.

Dorado are a different story. Probably going to need dithers to make them work with anything. Luck of the draw with these guys, I have 1 that causes no issues and one that's just angry. Not many Brasiliensis Dorado out there, but the ones that are seem to tolerate tank mates better then the Frankies.

Both the mentioned fish can grow pretty fast. You might get a year or a little more out of a 180, but it's going to come down to how you keep them. People here keep larger fish in smaller tanks so it definitely wouldn't be the end of the world.... lol.

Everyone here sure seems to like their ATF and I can't blame them, but they're going to need BIG tanks down the road. IF sticking with a 180, I'd be looking at wolves. Have heard groups of Gold Wolves are quite the sight, active, and stay a manageable size.

thanks! yeah was really disheartened when they died. the dorado is probly my fave fish.. i am looking for a brasiliensis, although like you said are pretty rare. specially here in asia. so you're saying brassy are more tolerant of tankmates then franky? how about growth rate? does yours have tankmates already? aside from the rays.. yea i think i've seen most your vids, been here on mfk for a while now, i just don't post much..

maybe that's the key to keep odoe then, decent tank size and kept in a group.. this is something i really wanna try.. i'm still in the market for a big tank, minimum of atleast somthing in the 8x3 range. prefferably a used one, meaning cheaper.. just have to find one in good shape..

good idea! how about odoes and gold wolves maybe 3-4 pike and 5 wolves in the 180..
i also loved my atf, but i dunno if i'm gonna keep another. they just grow too slow.. the dorado on the other hand, just gotta have it..

I'm sure it will eventually end up coming down to the individual fish, but I know of 2 Brassys in community settings and seem to work so of the 2 that we have tabs on seem ok with tankmates. I have 1 Franky that works with other fish fine and one that is a terror, but I know there's been several Frankies on this board that were meant to be loaners..... Odds seem to go to the Brassies thus far :)

My Brassy's in with 7 Masheers right now. There's nipped fins most the time though, but I think Masheers can be a little more frisky then they lead on.

I really feel Odoe are better kept in groups. A 8x3 would be fine for life I'm sure..... Plan for a max size that's larger then you ever hear of (18" Odoe) and tank that's twice that is more then most offer their monsters.....

Biggest Dorado I've heard of in captivity is 30", and that's quite a feat! I see no reason 3' wouldn't work for him for an awful long time.

I say do it!!!!!!!!!! :)

nice! i guess it's on then.. :) might have to wait a little for a brassy to come by though.. thanks for your replies
