Got my 1st Goonch!

Nice fish you have there!

I really wish more people would hang on to this variety. I know that most folks have spouted that it's the dwarf variety that's been erroneously labeled as Bagarius bagarius. I've been quite on board that train as well.

However, I was doing some rescaping on my tank the night before last and I had to move my Dottie (a goonch of this variety) by hand. I was able to pick her up and measure her. She was just under ten inches. That's almost three inches of growth since I got her back in (I think) march. Supposedly the dwarfs don't get over 8".

One thing's for certain, the genus Bagarius is in dire need of revision. I've had several long conversations with Dr. Ng who validated this assessment. I'm beginning to wonder if this variety might actually turn out to be B. rutilus as Estarego8 and I had previously speculated.

Questions like this are why I love this hobby!

so far he is actually not eating, I have tried bloodworms, beefheart and market shrimp, anyone have any ideas, he is only 5".

Chicxulub- Wes sold this to me as a yarelli. Do you think it is a different species?

At this point in the hobby, we don't even know what a yarrelli is. ;)

Read this article first. It'll explain to you in depth how messed up the genus is. It is however unlikely to actually be yarrelli as explained in that article. There is a population of goonch from Thailand currently called yarrelli, but that doesn't mean it's valid. Wes' assessment IS likely correct based on current literature, however. I digress- it's easier for you to just read the article. :lol2:

After that, check out this thread, my growout thread for my goonch of the same variety. I've labeled my fish as a dwarf specimen, but it's juuuuust under 10" now. Her fins are also getting very yellowish orange. I'm excited to continue to grow her out to see how big she gets and what happens with her fins. There is a very real chance that our variety will turn out to be B. rutilus.

Great read! I am not gonna lie I am a little bummed out I was hoping to get a goonch with potential massive size for the pond that I am building.

Very cool fish. Bagarius Bagarius It is the smallest of the group only 7'9" will eat most everything in a tank as it gets bigger including your fingers. It is one great hunter!
