Believe me that the rest of the world is just shaking their had at the dysfunction of our shutdown:

A friend of mine visiting from Europe was trying to get his head around it: So they won't agree to a budget because it includes enactment of a law that helps millions of people get health insurance?!?

Matt
My health insurance will be cancelled effective Jan 1st. The company I have been insured through for many many years will no longer provide health insurance. A friend on mine in a diff state got the same notice, from a different company this week.
Health Insurance Companies are folding up, leaving clients with nothing.
There is NO media coverage of this, anywhere.
I suppose if we can't find insurance we will be fined.
"If you want to keep your insurance, you can".
RIGHT.

My wife informed me about an hour ago that our insurance rates, deductible,co pay and drop some coverage as of jan 1st so it will now be on par with the new government program. She also said the company she works for made policy that all new employees will be part time with only management being full time and offered insurance.

I know off topic sorry I couldn't help but post it after reading the above posting.

I was nearly going to post that link. And yes, everyone I've talked to here can't believe the madness of the situation! Your politics baffle us at the best of times, but this just takes the cake.

And I'm pissed off with the situation too! We're trying to plan our trip to the US next year and all the national park websites etc etc are offline because of the shutdown. Certainly hope it is all resolved by March...

I think it mis-characterizes what "raising the debt limit means"

Is it true that raising the debt ceiling gives Congress a "license to spend more"? No.

Raising the debt ceiling simply lets Treasury borrow the money it needs to pay all U.S. bills and other legal obligations in full and on time.

Those bills are for services already performed and entitlement benefits already approved by Congress.

So raising the debt ceiling is more like a license to continue paying what the country owes. And the obligations are incurred because of countless decisions made by lawmakers from both parties over the years.

A good overview: http://money.cnn.com/2013/09/27/news/economy/debt-ceiling-faqs/index.html

In a market-based economy, employers can choose to offer or not offer health insurance. And employees can choose to continue to work for one employer or move to another that provides better wages and benefits. It's not the government's fault...it's your employer and/or insurance company's.

If you need insurance, have you gone to the Health Insurance Marketplace for California? https://www.coveredca.com/

The Insurance Exchanges are basically like online travel sites: private insurance companies bid for your business.

The bigger question is: What does this have to do with Congress coming to an agreement on the national budget?

I am a grad student working 2 jobs to keep myself out of debt (which is nearly impossible currently). The least expensive insurance that is available to me according to Healthcare.gov is around $175 each month. To give you an idea of how that would affect me, I allow myself $75 each month for things like going out with friends to eat, see movies, tank fills and park fees for scuba, etc. I keep about $300 in the bank for when I need it (truck breaks down, random fees for school, etc.) but otherwise do not have any other available money. The rest of it goes to rent, tuition, car payment, bills, and so on. If this bill goes through, IT WILL NOT HELP ME, IT WILL BREAK ME! And I know that I am not alone in this.

Getting back on topic, I was hired to give a presentation at a nature park that is on federal land. They were to pay for gas and lodging over the weekend. For my birthday, my husband booked a dive trip in the area that is non refundable. If the Gov't stays shut down through the end of this month then I will not get paid or have lodging over the weekend then we will have to forfeit the $300 we spent on the dive trip.
