Omega 1 vs NLS

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You are just trying to start a fight!!!

I will weigh in anyway. I have used both brands, but NLS is the main staple for my african cichlids. NLS gives me great results - and I am not just talking about looks. I am talking about general health, activity, breeding, etc. I am in no way saying that Omega One is not as quality, just that NLS works for my fish.

Now, in looking at the ingredients list, I believe NLS wins by far (comparing just the Omega One Super Color Sinking Cichlid Pellet and the NLS Cichlid Formula). While it sounds good that Omega One uses whole fish (like "whole salmon, halibut, whole shrimp") these are not actually the largest sources of protein. The reason is the amount of water in these ingredients inflates where these protein sources fall in the ingredients list. This is unfortunately a common practice in most pet foods.

Basically, ingredients are listed by amount, with the greatest amount of the first ingredient being used and the least amount of the last ingredient used (I hope that made sense). Since both of these fish foods are pellets, almost all of the water is removed. An ingredient like whole fish has a large amount of water, which is lost during the manufacturing process. This water loss is not translated to the ingredients list, so these whole fish products really fall much farther down the list and are likely not even the main source of protein. On the other hand, most of the water is already removed from the fish meal, so it is likely that this actually is the number one ingredient.

My main gripe with NLS is I wish they listed the components of the fish meal. What part of the fish is used and what type of fish. But the fact that Krill meal comes first means that is the main source of protein, so in part I am satisfied.

I will finish by saying again, I am in no way saying Omega One is a bad food, or that it is not as good as NLS. I am simply stating facts about ingredients lists, manufacturing processes, and my own personal experiences.
The nls rep at the aquatic experience in shaumburg last weekend had a nls formula for herbivores, didn't get a chance to look at the ingredients that closely but if its as goood as this other lines it should be great for mbuna.

Amazed at how quickly this thread escalated... Guys no need to jump down each others throats...

If you believe the pellet you are feeding benefits your fish more then great... But no need to disqualify someone elses experience just coz it didnt work out the same for you....

Literally every cichlid breeder in ontario has made the switch, there are issues with selling the food down south, and it will be rebranded something else as far as i've been told. Now as for your opinion on something you haven't had any access to it you are going on assumptions which make you look as stupid as you are. This is directed at jc1119 or whatever. Also if you want it all you have to do is order some from canada.

Once again a superior product has been produced by canadians, and it will eventually catch on elsewhere.

Again I'm sure north fin is a fantastic product but the thread is not about it. Please stick to the topic. I know I'm immediately contradicting myself, but I notice your avatar is the fishing really as great as all the tv shows says it is in canada? I wanted to take a trip up there but don't want to be disappointed

You know every breeder in Ontario? Nice. And you have been told it's being rebranded under a different name? Interesting, because that's not at all what the owner (Darius) told me per our conversation, but hey I'm just the stupid guy here right lol.

But yeah, it makes total sense to pay more for a food that has distribution and branding issues.

This convo is not about NF, but I find it interesting that every thread NLS is involved in has NF trolls showing up claiming its the be all end all of fish food. If it is, then there wouldn't be distribution issues "down south" in the land of cichlids.

Wow. You troll the thread, take it off topic, claim the impossible. (knowing what every breeder uses) and start calling names. That sure makes me want to buy your product when it shows up under it's new name. I hope this thread closes quicker than the last bologna fest. I will stick with Xtreme. People who use it don't say vicious things. That goes for the NLS people too.

Getting a food product across the boarder for the purpose of sale is not easy. I still cant find bulk pellets of any kind here. No one will ship from the US and our distributers here dont bring in bigger indavidual quantities.

It has absolutely nothing to do with how "good" the product is. Even if NF was better "im not saying it is as i dont know" it wouldnt make any difference in it making it to florida. So using "its not here in florida yet so it cant be that great" is probably the least inteligent statement sofar.

Who said it wasn't great? I'd love to find out for myself but don't want to pay extra to get it here. Sent emails and got no response but Darius did respond in a recent thread.

My only point about Florida is there are 19 million folks here and most of the US fish farms so it would be a good place to target. Purely based on numbers.

Just because my personal issue with the inclusion of montmorillonite-clay is what it is doesn't mean its a bad food. I never once said it was either.

But once again the op asked about Omega One vs NLS. Not Northfin. But as Rodger pointed out, it's not the Xtreme or NLS folks calling names here.

I agree with you basically 100% i just dont think you understand Canadian Customs when it comes to shiping food for the purpose of sale. Florida could have 38 million people who all love fish.. Customs does not care.

A new company like NF cant offord to do cross boarder without help. It could take along time until they find a suitable distributer that fits there needs. Again, im in no way shape or form saying NF is better. Im just saying just because you cant get it were you live. Means absolutely nothing about the "quality" of said food.

Agreed on quality and I only understand customs based on the info R.D. has presented in various food threads. Still learning there for sure.

But, if the op had asked the question which fish should I buy, a Midas or a Red Devil, answering "an Oscar" doesn't answer the question. Lol
