Fish Tank Odor

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The oscar has sand... and I haven't been able to find a great way to clean it.... if i use the gravel vacuum it just sucks all the sand out :( Any suggestions in regards to that?

The canister should help considerably as it's a sealed unit, the HOB is probably collecting all the gunk and it's building up there. I had this issues once with an aquaclear, fed my piranha some green sunfish as a treat (too many) and the next day the smell was awful. Oscars put off a pretty heavy bioload, I would hook up the can and imagine it'd get better.

Normally PFS will not get sucked up in my tanks but they are tall tanks. For smaller tanks the sand will need to be stirred to release the traped gas as you vacume the tank a long dowl or stick is good for this. Also, and I don't know the depth of your substrate a more shallow layer of sand would be eaiser to maintaine. If you had plants it could be rotting root systems in the substrate that is adding to the problem but at any rate the Hydrogen Sulfide build up will need to be realsed. Once you have this done as I discribed in my previous post doing this once every couple of weeks to a month should keep the problem from reoccuring.

Its a standard 20 gallon. I think they're 18" tall? And yea it is a pretty thin layer maybe an 1"-1.5" and he always fluffs everything up when he roughs around in the sand.

Then if the cause isn't from the substrate, if he is moving it around a lot you shouldn't be getting an anarobic build up in the substrate take a close look at the filters. I like two filters on a tank because you can alturnate cleanning without disrupting the BB too much and if one stops you still have circulation. I'm in Hamilton every day if you want I can stop by one day after work and check things out.

I've read enough complaints from people who hate the way their tanks stink when they feed massivore that I'll never try it. I think switching it out would make a significant dent in your stench. maybe cut it down to 1 pellet a day and use another food to fill out his diet.

have you picked out the filter already? with an oscar, you may as well buy pretty big. that way you won't need to buy another when you upgrade his tank in a few months.

Btw, since no one has mentioned it, how long have you used the carbon and how often do you replace it?

The carbon hasn't even been in a whole month yet. So I haven't replaced it yet. The zeocarb bags have only been in there about a week and a half. In regards to the canister filter I'm getting a marine land C220 which is good up to 55 gallons and I'm going to keep the over the hanging 50 gallon marine land penguin filter running in addition to the canister. I do this with my goldfish tank and it works great for them.
