how big should a jag be at this age

very nice jag jrt, the jags here in the uk are rarely of a good quality! id say if you hit 10 inch in a year your above average...
 
If it's truly a year old, from the day it hatched, if it reaches 8" that's pretty fast. It takes quite a while to go from fry to 2" where the growth really starts to speed up. I'd love to see any species of cichlid go from an egg to 12" in any average sized aquarium.

I would definitely say all of us new world cichlid owners with medium sized fish need to be a bit more patient. I was getting pretty frustrated with my males growth about a month ago, but then realized he was actually bigger than I thought when I measured a piece of wood in his tank at around 10" and realized he wasn't 7-8" anymore like I previously thought, he's closer to 9-9.5" now. I think the key is to not pay too much attention to it from week to week, we see our fish so much that sometimes it seems like they're not growing at all.
