Please help! i'm setting up a new 175gallon and I need some advice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If your filter and gravel have you 40 cycled as long as you only add the convict for now there is no concern as your adding no more bio load and have more water volume. You can add a new fish right away. It's the only way to start colonizing more bacteria for your tank as they need the fish waste. Get a test kit and add your first tank mate. Do water changes as needed until your filter catches up.

You want filter(s) that can deliver at the very least 600gph, but I would shoot for about 1000gph.......and that can house a lot of bio media. A lot of people here will tell you Ehiem or Fluval, but I've been very satisfied with my bargain, no-name brands: Sunsun 304b and Odyssea 700cfs canister filters.

You can also turn that 45gal into a sump filter which can easily meet these suggestions.

actually I think I'm going to go with Aqua One Nautilus 2700UV External Canister Filter instead, bit more powerful than the sunsun in addition to the fluval 305 that will cycle the water 5.8 times per hour so I think thats enough filtration...

I just Googled that filter and saw the YouTube vid and it just doesn't look like a quality product for that big price tag. Plastic looks really thin and hinges doesn't look beefy at all. Its constructed essentially like the Sunsun but at 3X the price. It that filter was $100 I say ok, but for the price, I would spend a little more and get an FX which has nearly twice the flow rate......or 3X Sunsun 304b which would deliver 1200-1300 gph reallistically and can hold 18lbs of ceramic bio rings.

I'm sorry but if what your saying is to buy 3 sunsun filters I'm sorry but that is ridiculous... I will have a look at that FX or something else, thanks.

Why is that ridiculous?

I have 2 Sunsun 304b and a Odyssea 700cfs on my 180. Total price is well under $300

Because it's a hassle having 3 filters that would use up more power than going it safe and buying 1 really good filter that is only a little bit more expensive and will probably perform better for longer. See what I mean?
