Water changes for 90 gallon Oscar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I do 50%-60% every sunday on my oscar. Sometimes twice a week if I feel like it.

I haven't been monitoring parameters since my test kit ran out, I hadn't had any problems in the past with this regimen and ive since added pothos to the system.

Obviously more is better if you have the time or energy.

Life gets in the way and I'm guilty of slacking off from time to time

But if after a water change, pH is 7.6, and in 2 weeks, it drops to 5.1, then you need to do more water changes in between

Or provide something to buffer the water against the dropping pH? I agree that the water chemistry should determine the regime though, if I did a 75% water change I'd lose 3/4 of my mineral hardness (which is pretty low to start with, and non-existant out of the tap), and it would take me over an hour to refill with the garden hose! I know a lot of people swear by massive changes, but my feeling is that if you need to change more than 50% at a time you should probably be doing more frequent changes, rather than larger.

The way these things progress on forums it won't be long before a 12'X4'X4' tank will be "required" to "humanely" keep a single Bolivian Ram.

It's already been said but, let your water parameters determine your water change regimen. Unfortunately you won't know your requirements until you get there. I highly doubt that you're going to have a very strenuous regimen given that stocking level.

Lots of good responses. Personally I'd imagined doing around 50% a week, but I can see the consensus is that I'd have to do more.

Any volume change would be fine if I could get a good adapter to use the python water changer, as it stands I'm using buckets. Brb doing my back in lol.

I'm surprised we haven't heard about having to have a sump and w fx5's for your 6 in Oscar. And yes, you'll eventually need a at least a 500 gal of you'd like to house a pleco w your oscar

Quick question, for those of you who have kept an Oscar in a 90 gal, by itself or with a couple of dithers; what sort of weekly water change would I be looking at?

The original question... FOR THOSE WHO HAVE KEPT AN OSCAR...... obviously some respondents have not.

Sometimes I go a week --sometimes a week, and a half --normally I do a 50% when I do change water out. I had a full grown oscar in a 75 gal for a few years --did fine ---but he got moved to an 8ft tank recently, and on that I do a water change about once a month; given shes by herself except for a 2 convicts, and a 4" jaguar cichlid. Things will change once the Jag puts a little more strain on the FX6

I currently have 2-9" oscars, 7" Mayan, 12" Kraussi and a 14" red bay snook with a 13" pleco in a 125 and do a 25-30% water change every 2 weeks. A well established tank shouldn't require anymore than that. Of course you can do whatever you like.

Interesting!

Ideally I'd want to have an adult O, and not be dedicating my life to water changes. I know for sure I'll be doing a 90g minimum, and will probably have a fluval 405 for filtration (not that it will affect chemistry as much).

I feel as if not that long ago, the common word was a 55 gallon for an Oscar, with 50% changes a week, I.e. 100 litres. Since then the consensus seems to have grow massively.
