high ammonia in a cycled tank,,,

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
sounds like a mini cycle to me. usually caused by a disruption of the bio filters. changing of substrate can bring this on also if bio filtration is bare min to meet requirements of the tank.

What u mean by filtration is bare min to meet requirement ? My tank is bare bottom and I haven't touch the filter in like 1-2 months lol , thanks

you state biohome as your bio filter, what size filters are you running, biohome a brand name for a bio media not a filter. prefer seachem matrix myself

are you running a sump? canister? HoB,s? combo of any?

its a mini cycle if I were to guess. Your bioload outweighed your bio filter for one reason or another. Could have been the addition of a new fish, overfeeding by accident for a day or two, just about anything could be the cause. The tank is going to run its course, just keep up with good water changes and keep an eye on the ammonia levels to make sure none of the fish burnt. .5 won't be detrimental immediately but it needs to come down.

yes, improper media/ filter cleaning. barring adding new fish to the tank, the math is the math, 2+2 will always =4, there is no other answer. I would add a AC110 to the tank for mech filtration.

Lol haven't clean filter in a while now , maybe my bio load isn't big enough for the fishes I have?

that's not possible. to small yes, to big no. hopefully some else can help you I am off to  on this one, GL.

how many gallons is ur tank? with 2 fx5 and a pro 3 should do the job and some. id prime the tank to get the ammonia down in the time being than flush the canisters with tank water and see if it stables afterwards. but yes it does sound like ur tank jump out of cycle. you can also try seachem stability works wonders for me.
