The only reason diesels are great is cause you can make lots of power but you can only do that with emissions. With the laws now many don't understand you can't even run a new diesel without filling up on def (diesel exhaust fluid). Add that to the price of gas, the improper handling of the gas you buy that isn't mixed right due to politics (bio diesel) that will lead to gelling up in the winter and all of a sudden there's lots of costs that many people overlook and don't understand till it happens. All it takes is buying mis-advertised bio diesel and it could cost you stupid money.
They're cracking down on emissions. That's why the new $70K dollar pickups run $3500 diesel particulate filters in addition to needing def to stay clean enough to be legal. Delete EGR and program it and your local dealer will figure it out. Bye bye warranty. Even a K&N can void the 100K warranty now.
Never heard of a $30K long block? Go down to your local Mopar counter and inquire about the Eco diesel going into he new grand Cherokees.
Diesel is the "way of the future" for one reason - auto manufacturers have mileage mandates that need to be met, BUT guess what? There's no limit on how much the mileage costs. As long as they can bring the average up they'll do it even if it takes $30K engines. Different manufacturers have different takes on this - Dodge/Chrysler/Fiat likes diesels but it's costing a fortune to clean them up enough to get them by the EPA. Ford's taking the small cheap force fed approach. Smaller engines with turbos (ecoboost). Guess who isn't going to service their vehicle regularly? The person that paid $60-70K for a Jeep that gets butt hurt about $200+ oil changes (recommended to drain for almost an hour). So then people who can't afford a new one buys some neglected uncared for money pit. Would rather buy a new disposable 100K mile car, wouldn't you?
With technology bringing us force fed gas with variable timing I see no reason to opt for diesel unless its a work truck, since the gas engines are so much cheaper to get and maintain.
Just my .02$...... lol
