Have you ever wanted a career in fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've managed to work my way up in the last year and get out of some of the really bad positions, I'm making more money than most of my friends who went to college, but you definitely work for it lol. Which makes it hard to leave. They've got a maintenance electro/mechanical apprenticeship with free schooling opening up soon. I'm gonna chase that golden opportunity.

I think I'd just be happy building tanks on the side. Maybe not build actual tanks - but building stands, drilling, plumbing, and setting up elaborate sump systems on large tanks with custom backgrounds and lighting. Then selling them as ready to use units.

I wish you all the best!

First...who says you're gonna make it to 65 in the cube? How about being forced out at 51...can't get another job your trained for because you're too old...and then you're forced to work at the big-box store at 25% your former pay???

Second. Please do a spell check. It's terrible to talk about paying for the kids education...and "education" is misspelled!;)

First, thanks for making me feel worse. Second, I feel bad for you and wish you well.

Hey, the worst part about the misspelling, I spent 6 years in University with a degree in English and Business, 'aint that a hoot? Grammar 'aint my friend neither!

I'm serious! I get by on my looks and personality. One outweighs the other, but neither is noteworthy.

I was thinking of itchylogy ( butchered spelling) or environmental conservation but I switched and now attend UTI. Not the medical UTI either. But I'm now in the recruitment process for the Army.

Reason I switched is because I want fish keeping to be a hobby. Once you're hobby is mandatory and not voluntary it's a job. Not a hobby.

On the other hand, being a pro fisher wouldn't be too shabby.

I wouldn't approach my job as General Manager of a major aquarium as just a job. No way! :)

The big question is...

Who on this forum works in fish and makes good money on the hobby?

Does it actually work or is it nothing more than a reasonable living

I think if you had an established/repeat client list, selling coral online and/or in a brick and mortar seems like it would make a pretty penny.

Further, I'd imagine being the General Manager of a major Aquarium might be a good paying job. I may be wrong??

That's a bit different because you're main job would be to run a profitable business and not taking care of the fish directly.

But I would be the General Manager of Animal Husbandry and Filtration systems. In my dream scenario there would be a General Manager of Marketing and Business. So, yeah, my job would be fish and filters. :)

Maybe my title would be better - Director than GM. Yup Director. I would love going into work. The problems of the job would be like that old saying, a bad days fishin' is better than a great day in the office. My office would be the tanks and filters.

And i would be directing a team of people underneath me.

To dream, the impossible dream! :)
