sump size for a 300g

I'm no expert on the matter but as far as I've learned and experienced, the main things to be concerned of is being able to house enough media for the bio-load of your tank, somewhere to put your mech filtration with easy access, and then room for your return pump and other things you would like to house in your sump. I like baffles because it stops the fine particles passing through your mech and into the return area. Of course the more water volume you can add to your system is always better but if space is concern than the biggest dump tank you can fit.

How does this sound:

5" section on one side with two filter socks, blocked off by egg crate.

The bulk of the tank filled with 50L of k1 media (is this too much for a 100g sump?) being pushed around by a power head.

5" section on the opposite side of the tank with a jebao DCT 12000 (new model) I am considering adding two pumps--is this advisable?

That's the plan though... yup. Some chance it will have to be a 75g tank, because the dimensions on every stock tank I can find are going to be difficult to fit under the stand I am in the process of building.

Not too sure about that design, but I hope it allows for extra water when your return pump shuts off in the event of a power outage or failure. I'm not a big fan of filter socks, never tried it because they look troublesome to me. For the two sumps I've built, I just copied the basic eShoppes design which I find easier to maintain. But building your own allows you to customize to your needs. For my 75g and 120g, I used the standard 20g tank, 24"x12"x16", I'm able to use a five gal bucket full of bio balls, as well as sponges and ceramic rings for more bio filtration. The only downside wadi could fit a large heater in this sump. I should have used a 36 inch tank but I couldn't find any cheap used ones for sale. But I keep the sump half filled with water allowing more than enough room for the pump turning off and excess water to drain into the sump.

I considered a similar build, but want something much more simple. The plan is to fill the sump to around 60% to account for any such issues. Some reef buddies are coming over this week to look at my plans. Hopefully they'll have some input. I have never built a sump before.
 
Egg crate won't block K1. Take it from someone who didn't measure. There is another brand, slightly larger but basicly the same, that won't get through or stuck in the egg crate. I forget who makes it but they deal strictly with aquaculture and sewage. One of the guys on here said they will sell the quantity an aquarist would use.
 
Interesting. Maybe I could double up on the egg crate, and overlap two panels so as to reduce the hole sizes by 50%. I could even go as far as to triple up on each size. K2 and K3 are the same, only larger, correct? Perhaps that could be another viable alternative.
