Native fish or other cichlids with Tiger Oscar in a 75g?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
defo worth getting a bigger tank, if he isnt stunted too badly he will put on alot of weight with every half inch... a 13 inch o is massive! i have kept many cichlids inc o's and i was surprised yesterday when i put my new jag of 11 inch in my 300g community with a 9 inch jag, its easily twice the weight, get something with a 2x2 dimension side on imo.

Natives are fine at tropical temps.

I think most tropicals could be kept at lower temps than we normally keep them at as well.

Whats the next size you guys recommend to be able to stock a full grown Oscar+ a couple pumpkinseed and/or bullhead (both big enough so they won't be eaten

For that stock, you'd need at least a 6ft tank in my opinion.
Something in the 125gal and up range.
Depth is not that important, but footprint is.
Most 100+ tanks are 6ft by 18".

Tank size aside....
Im surprised nobody mentioned temperature. When I kept NA natives I had my tank in the basement and kept temps under 70°.

But I suppose that you could find a happy medium where both fish would be happy.

Sunfish thrive at 68-76 IME and can tolerate up to about 86 without dying. Bullheads thrive at pretty much anything as long as they're not frozen or boiling, I keep my yellow at 76.

Get him a nice 6 ft tank, put a fx6 or an eheim 2260 and a big sponge filter with a powerhead and you will be treating your Oscar decent. They deserve the best care but they will reward you with the best wet pet experience possible.

a 75 will work, but it is the minimum, not ideal. Honestly I'd go with a 125 if your budget can handle it. I think this would give the O some space to swim and you could add another cichlid or two and or one of the fish you inquired about adding.
