Thoughts on Fancy Goldfish

Interesting thread, how can anyone pretend to know if the fish is pain ?

If the fish were struggling to swimm or in pain it would lead to stress, then disease, then death. I doubt a fish that is living "years" is in pain

Any way dont see anything wrong with fancy gold fish. Oscars are line breads too

I've seen hundreds of them at many different stores and they all look "disabled" to me. I just think that we need to stop trying to genetically alter animals in a negative way. Breeding for albinism or melanism or the like is one thing but dying and changing to body shape of the fish are another.

You have your opinion, I have mine. Animals are for my benefit and enjoyment. Does that mean I can abuse them no - they must be treated with care. We simply have a different opinion on what is abuse. Fancy goldfish are not negative! They are works of living art.

Regardless of life span it's not fair to the animal, it'd be like if someone bred humans so that you had a gigantic hunchback and three legs, could you still live a healthy life, yes. But wouldn't you be much happier if you were a normal person?

Disabled people are just as happy as anyone else. My fancy Goldfish are just as happy as your fish.

Aquarium fish are works of art. Be careful, you're heading down a slippery slope.

Does any fish deserve to live it's life in a glass box. Would you be happy if I kept you in a phone booth for your whole life? See how fast the slope gets slippery?

This conversation can lead to someone saying, keeping fish is abuse, which in turn can lead to keeping dogs is abuse, etc.

Breeding animals for beauty is whats at stake. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Lets agree to disagree shall we? :)

Redearsunfish, You just nailed it! If we call fancy goldfish art no one has the right to criticize them. It would be quite impolitic to do so.

Well, if you want to keep them then go ahead, but you'll never see me keeping any animal with a genetically changed body. I'm also not one of the people who calls everything anybody has ever made a piece of art. Do I think me prettiest darters are art, no, just colorful organisms created over time by evolution. And I don't see how keeping a fish is comparable to keeping a person in phone booth, maybe if that fish were in a jar only twice it's size. I'd be more than content in a large enough enclosure for my entire life if someone fed me and I never had to work in my life, just throw in a small fishing pond and I'm good :).

Well, we'll agree to disagree. But if you broadside fancy goldfish, i'm standing up for them. :) And I will continue to stand up for them.

But dear sir, i must offer, a 100 gallon tank for an animal that may live in an ocean or lake or a river... i must stroke my beard and wag my chin and make clicking noises with my tongue and say, are our aquariums but jars? Answer dear sir!

I can't comment on the humane nature of how they're bred. I guess all this time I didn't know they're genetic morphs. In any event, I think they're kinda cool. Didn't like them when I was younger. Now I think the Ranchu's, Orandas, etc are pretty cool.

Redearsunfish is to goldfish what divemaster is to NA natives. It's about time you two stubborn bullheaded members crossed paths and got a taste of your own medicine. I been waiting a long time for this lol
