Fader Bifasciatus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oh and as far as these piebald fish from Conkel I feel its a fader gene more than piebald.
From what Im familiar with piebaldism is that the patches dont grow in size or spread.
Either way piebald isnt to uncommon or limited to specific animals or species.
If you google piebald animals a bunch will show up, and aren't hybrid.

If you look at the species mentioned in the other thread, it's certainly not a stretch to see the same Paratheraps Lake Catemaco gene in Ruck's male. They all have the "fader" gene look, and many/most change quite a bit as they mature. Oh, and did I mention that those zonatus were also sold as "wild caught". :)

Yeah your right that it looks like it could be in there. Its tough to say all we have is a few peoples word that its legit. Did you see the pic of the piebald bifasciatus on cichlid room companion?

Yes, those are natural color morphs, that can naturally occur within populations of wild fish - but a fader gene, such as seen in amphilophus? Ruck's fish doesn't look like anything that has ever been documented in the thousands of bifas bred over the years, wild, F1, or domestic strains. Now add in the so called piebald zonatus that came from Conkel, that was also supposedly WC.

The odds are staggering .....

Best of luck with your breeding project.

Ah, come on RD. "Fader" genes have popped up in all sorts of different cichlid species. There's plenty in Amphilophus, several in Parachromis (dovii, managuensis, and at least a couple friedrichsthalii or loisellei, I don't remember which), Petenia, Vieja fenestratus, and I've seen it in Hypsophrys nicaraguensis. Obviously it's a trait shared across many cichlid species. You know I like to rip on Conkel, but you're making a tenuous assumption at best.

Ha, looking at that zonatus thread from three years ago I said almost the same thing...
Yeah I saw the old post. All I can say is I see both sides of the argument. And I do trust Ghani. Hes the nicest guy you will ever meet. And I wouldn't believe him to pass on information that wasn't correct. Or to trust someone leading him on.
