Long story short...I'll be upgrading my daughter's 1 gallon bowl to a 5 gallon or a 10 gallon long tank for her betta(I already have these tanks).

What I don't have is a filter. My first thought was a sponge filter(which to my surprise is hard to find). My LFS has 1(and I do mean 1) for $14.99...which seems too high priced. But walmart and Petsmart don't even stock these.

So, I've been considering a HOB filter. My concern is I thought I read somewhere that Male Bettas are sensitive to current(meaning they need next to nearly none). Is this true?

What would someone recommend? I do prefer the cheapest possible. I have seen some small HOB that should fit on the 10 or 5. Would that be ok?

Thanks

The small HOB will work as long as the Betta doesn't have to fight s strong current. Btw if you want sponge filters for cheap go on aquabid:)

I've been reading(just now) horror stories of HOB filters and Bettas. I also found a sponge filter for $8.99 online.

Seems most stores aren't crazy about bringing in sponge filter/corner filter. There is not much profit, no replacement cartridges to sell you.

Or build a bottle filter. Take a 16oz water bottle drill 3 holes on top and bottom load with media and add an airline. Search online for pics if interested

Too funny... I did this back in the 90's

Mine was a small kitchen container. I put in a few rocks(for weight). Some filter and carbon.

Really?

I've had plenty of bettas in tanks with hob and never had any issues. I have a betta right now in a 29gal with an internal filter(Whisper 40i) and an hob(AC20). The betta often charges into the hob current to get at pellets
