Fluval FX6 canister filter experiences and set up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi Jim no problem at all I am glad I can be of some help here. So far the filter is still working just fine on the blocks of wood. Ill let it sit there another 24 hours to make sure its all good but so far I don't notice anything different about how it runs.

The Rays are pure BD. The male is one of Vamptrev pups. and the female is one he got from another breeder for me. I got them in the 75 till my 440 gets shipped. should be getting shipped this week or next week.

This is good news inded and just what i was hoping. I assume it is working as you already had the filter primed and running before raising the height of it. Fluval state 20cm or 8" below the water line as the filter is gravity fed, but i was hoping (as you have correctly proven) that once primed and the syphon going the hieght of the filter is not so critical. This plus the fact the manufacturer will state a safety buffer. They probably know this can be done but would not recommend it, especially if the filter is not already primed.
I hope to fill the filter with water, tip it slightly on it's side to get the lid below the water line, then start the pump. Hopefully this should prime it and get the syphon going. Fingers crossed. Going to try it at the weekend hopefully and let you know the outcome ;);)

I think I could fill it with water and plug it in and I think it would take right off with no problems. even on the blocks of wood.

This is a pic of when I did my water change today. The water is about 4 inches below the top of the canaster. It's still pumping just fine.

Just a guess, but if you were to clean the filter it would be a real bugger to get it restarted once you have broken the siphon.

I am not sure how hard it would be to get it to restart. next week when I do my water change I plan to clean the filter and I will plug it back in with the tank half empty to see what happens.

Make sure you fill the filter with water before putting the lid back on and restarting. I just started mine up with no issues. Although I don't get FLuvals measurements. After all this the lid of the canister is sitting a good 6" below the water line. Filter started up just fine.
