Jag tank size?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
was figuring 1-2", when I got any of mine they were all that size. can't imagine wanting to buy one already big lol it'll get there eventually
I always used to want to buy fully grown fish because i was too impatient to wait, but ive realized the beauty of seeing them grow up. Except maybe a GT or Uaru, they grow so slowly i would kill myself waiting for them. Possible literally lol.

I would probably end up with just an average LFS 2" Jag. If i saw a really nice one at about 4" or so i might take it, but i dont think i would want to go bigger than that.

I am of the school of thought, or philosophy of get the tank, then the fish. life has a way throwing a wrench into our plans.

No, this is the real BS answer .....

But, im still looking into others opinions to see how i will decide.

Which typically equates to; I'm going to do exactly what I want, as soon as more people agree with my position.

There are hundreds of threads like this on MFK, I only respond once in a while to warn off those that might stumble onto these topics down the road. In most cases, the people asking are going to do exactly as Pete suggested.

This is a BS answer.

I think it is not a bad thing to do, personally. (At the moment at least.) But, im still looking into others opinions to see how i will decide.

Nothing in this worls is right or wrong. Everything is changed by perspcetive.

For example, let me take the ethical standpoint. On one hand, im saving a fish from a 20 gallon tank in a store crammed with 15 other fish. And it could easily end up in the same situation if someone buys it. But on the other standpoint im putting it into a situatuion where it is, admittedly, pretty tightly squished in.

Or even a logical standpoint. A small tank doesnt technically limit a fish unless the fish is big enough that its unable to move. The food and water quality is what is important. In smaller tanks with bigger fish, it becomes difficult to maintain but not impossible. So it should work, right? But you could still come up with research saying that fish are stunted in enviroments that are too small, and have shorter lifespans.

Everyone counteracts each other. Neither is right or wrong technically. Im trying to decide what i think is right, and even if i do decide its fine, this is still a hypothetical situation that may not even occur.

You are not saving anything. Fish store have unlimited supply from fish farms. You take 1, and they will get 10 more.

It's like "saving" a puppy from a puppy mill. I don't suppose you think that's the right thing to do?

The only way, in the long run, is for everybody to stop cramping fish in small tanks. If they can't sell, they won't buy more.

How's that for a little perspective?

Do you think it's restrictive if the fish can't reach full speed in the tank due to it having inadequate length?
Do you think it's restrictive to keep an animal that has evolved over thousands of years to actively cruise through its watery home to hunt pray at high speed in a 200 gallon tank let alone a 75?
Do you think that several experienced fishkeepers could all be wrong and have no reason but to advise you to the best of their abilities?
Do you think that maybe you need to see things from the fishes perspective and resigne yourself to the fact that it would be much kinder to chose a smaller species?

Ps
You are not saving the fish from the store.
You are promoting the store to get another batch in that tiny overstocked tank.
And maybe the guy entering the store after you was looking for one for his 300gallon tank but you had the last one for your 75.

you under estimate RD, I am sure in the thousands. Not that changes anything. you look hard enof you will find the answer you are looking for, not the right answer, just the answer you want.

I tell my kids all the time, if you are not going to like the answer, do not ask the question. I am not going to tell you what you want to hear. Just what you need to hear.

Big fish in small tank with good food and water is like you living in a 4x12 cell with fresh air for life. You do it to the fish because you can, and because it somehow satisfies your need.

Nothing in this world is right or wrong? Really? Sounds like you can justify anything as long as it suits you? Been watching the news lately?

The biggest problem in this world is that too many people don't realize they can't have the cake and eat it too.

No. You seem to think i dont care about your opinions or the fish. If i didnt care i would have bought the Jag when i bought the tank. Or i would have kept the arowana and peacock bass it came woth. Or i would have kept the Festae pair that you all so kindly (not) said couldnt fit in my tank. If i didnt care i wouldnt ask i would just do it and then come on here 3 months later asking why my fish keep dying. If i didnt care i wouldnt take the time to do water changes and clean the filters. If i didnt care i wouldnt be on here offering whatever i can give to other people.

I do effing care about the fish i buy and i dont want to be seen as the arrogant, pig headed bastard who cant take no for an answer. But you, sir, need to understand that not everyone has the luxury of having a fish room where they can keep all the big tanks they have and has a full time job to support the, selves and a family who isnt upset at you for having the animals you do.

Im working with what i have here and im trying my best to make an EDUCATED decision about what i can do that will let me be happen but wont make me seem cruel at the same time. I will not listen to the opinion of one person, like you, just because they have experience. I have experiences too and they have told me different things that yours. My Festae lived fine in the tank. The 16" Arowana did great for the guy that had it before me, it had perfect fins and scales and no eye issues or bent spine or anything else. But thats impossible according to your experiences.

There is contradicting information here, and im doing my best to make what i can of it and make a decision that is good for me and the best it can be for any fish i get.

Terrorism is reasonable to the people who do it. I by absolutely no means recognize it as a good or appropriate way to settle any scores, but they are doing things for their god. To them its ok.

So, in fact, yes. You can justify it if it suits you. But thats hot what im doing here. I have not made a decision. Im very simply collecting data from everyone.

Im perfectly fine with any answer. What i dislike are arrogant ________ who want to try to enforce their opinion on me after goving it.

I want to hear your opinions. I dont want you to start raging at me because i dont immediately think you are correct.

Can you see the difference?
