Small to Medium SA/CA Cichlid species

Nice looking araguaiae darth. I like these fish a lot.

FYI, I've heard the thayeri get bigger and are more aggressive than the other species in the genus.

Yeah, I had a male that destroyed everything in his tank ... the female, four Noto dwarf pikes, and 10 zebra plecos one day while I was at work. Showing no prior aggression what so ever. Closest I've come to quitting the hobby.

Keyholes would be a good choice, though a lot of people consider them bland. They get larger than the cichlids, but tend to act more mellow which should allow them to coexist in a 30 long.

Another thought might be Cryptoheros myrnae, which I found to be fairly docile, although I kept my pair in a 75gal with a shoal of swordtails. I believe most aggression problems, with any species, have to do with tank size, so my experience with their docility, may be skewed.

Most medium sized cichlids are going to kill each other in a 36 inch tank if your going for a pair.

The point of the thread is to determine fish that are suitable for this tank size. As the original post states a single fish may be fine as well. I understand this tank size comes with challenges but I'm not working with the 30 long because it's the biggest tank I could get I have the tank because it fits like a glove into my stands lower shelf and looks great. I'm looking for fish that work in this setup. Notice that the only fish I'm excluding from choosing at this time are apistos and Rams so I'm sure there are many suitable choices.

Also should add that my LFS has a number of dwarf pikes in. I think some are regani but unfortunately the tank is just labeled dwarf pike. They also have the green dwarfs.

If they are true regani, then you could get a pair to bond in a tank that size (people have used 20 longs before without issues). But if they are Tapajos regani, or any of the other species, you'll be limited to one in a tank that size. Great fish though.

Firemouth, Portalgrensis, Aquidens pulcher, or any of the Acaras, Gynmogeophagus balzanii, Geophagus altifrons ("surinamensis"), Rainbow, Festivum, Salvini, Blue-eyed cichlid, Emerald cichlid, Cupid cichlid, you COULD technically do a female Green Terror but certainly not a male or pair, but I know/known people who have accumulated various females scattered around their fish rooms in the search for a male, they did just fine in smaller tanks. She CAN get 8", but i think you'll find 5-6" is the most common LARGER size you will find most female GTs. You could very well end up with one that stops growing at 4", i sure have. There's to name a few SA/CA, however there are also......

Africans and Asians as well you could do - Etroplus, Chromidotilapia ssp, Neolamprologous ssp., Eretemodus, Kribensis

What about neets......largely forgetten in the hobby gorgeous little things only require a 20 gallon for breeding pair. 2 pairs in a 40.

Krobia xinguenses.
