Firemouth Tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would stick with something from the Cryptoheros genus. Beautiful fish and they could live in a 55 just fine as they typically only reach 6" or so. But if you intend to let them breed (provided it's a male and female) then I'd advise against tank mates. Too small of a tank for anything else. You could do dithers, but not other cichlids.

Thanks. It's funny you say that because the smaller one usually has its color. The bigger one is normally pale.

the one i have in my 55 i have with some geos green terror port acara and festivum and some grow outs. firemouths are the one fish ive had with tons of different fish and they can hold their own against almost anything.

your tank is only big enough for a oscar alone. I would go for a convict maybe. but even then you may push your luck. 55g has alot of possibilies but not so much in terms of cichlids
Do not advice a convict ive had a covoct attack a piranha before

Some questionable advice in this thread.
The best tank mates for firemouths are more firemouths. They live in loose groups in the wild and do best in groups in tanks.
Get four more, add lots of caves and cover and a group of livebearers like swordtails or mollies.

That you just give is good advice

I agree with Stanzzzz, the cichlids in the genus Thorichthys are much like Geos in that they are more social than many other Mexican cichlids, so they tend to live in shoals. And especially if you want a pair, putting a group of 6 or so in the tank would up the odds that a compatible pairing would result. It would also help spread aggression around, and keep any one individual from getting beat up. Just buying a male and female does not guarantee pairing. These cichlids are much more sophisticated in their partner choices. A 55 is way to small to add an oscar, and even too small for the territorial attitude of most convict types, if you are looking to breed. A 55 may become too small for meek when they reach full potential, I have seen 10" individual males, so a 100 gal is much more fitting.
When in spawning colors, females will often display a dark patch in the dorsal.
