I am really intrigued by large fish with personality and everyone seems to point to the Oscar as having the most personality, I could spend 300-500$ and get a 75 gallon tank to set up for just a single one but is it really worth it or should I just opt for some schooling fish in a small tank instead? Someone on youtube commented and said keeping them is unethical as they get far too big and put a strain on any filtration system and should be left alone in the wild. What do you think?

i have seen what i call a large oscar in my local tropical aquarium and yes defiantly worth keeping never seen a very large albino one have to say.
i got green terrors, jack dempseys and a convict at the moment enjoy them very well. jacks are fast. Green terrors always upto mischeif (normally digging a whole while another one fills it with there dirt, my convict is either very excited and swimming away or very angry and and sitting there on the side of tank waiting for some one to swim by to 'give attitude to'
i am new to this myself and have only kept these fish for 5 weeks so should point that out!. before i use to keep those 200liter (55gal) tanks with mixed fish of tiger barbs and all sorts of other small tropical fish including rams, cribs, honey barbs, rainbow sharks, corys and what ever else the most exciting small fish i ever kept was a yoyo louch which is still with me today but i have to say compared to the personality on a large fish it is different.
one advantage of small fish is the poop is so small it gets sucked into the filter easy. also the water prams on the smaller tropical fish I HAVE KEPT were not so demanding.
i have not gone out of parmiters with my green terrors as i am worried what the consequences could be and just don't see the point of taking the risk

i did i think it was this forum find a single gallrey section full of SA cichlids but cant find it

It's definitely worth it if you have the right tank size, but as others have stated you can get very personable fish that will do fine in a 75 for life
Yes and no, if you get bored easily; then no. But if not, they are very entertaining and personable
I really love my Oscars. They're great and have big personality. They get excited when they see me, get REALLY excited at feeding time, and pout on the bottom during and after water changes or when I re-arrange the tank.
Here's a picture of them in my 150g. They're both at about 10" now and approximately 11 months old. This is not the greatest picture, but it was taken with my surface, so not the best camera.
