Just picked up a Gar for $12

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I can tell on an adult, but these were also 28"-35" adults

this is exactly what I meant when it comes to adults
There is no difference in patterning or color amongst the two gars you cannot tell the difference between the two. At 28-36" though it would be a somewhat safe bet saying that one is a female but there is no external venting method

you can tell the difference on wild caught individuals - i could see a very clear difference in pattern from Spotted or Florida. Have a better look at them i guess, it's fairly obvious to me

You cannot see the difference, color is irrelevant. This has been a brought up and a proven fallacy multiple times on this forum. For someone who just asked if a $12 gar is a good price and asked about growth rate you quickly became an expert on them. I'm not going to get back into this conversation again as it's proven many times on this forum. Wild caught the only difference is collection location.

never said i was an expert, but i have caught them on hook and line back in 2005-2006 and there were distinct differences in the pattern, not color.

Look at Google , you can definitely see differences in Spotted vs Florida in adult fish

The species were ID'd before this fancy new DNA testing, so there had to be a way they did way back in the day

There is a way but it is not pattern visual. Color changes on environment substrate stress all of which varies. You can convince yourself that there is a difference but every knowledgable gar keeper on this forum really knows there is no visual difference. It's I believe a gill plate or a scale under the hills that is lacking in a spotted and present in a Florida but the only way to tell is by lifting the gill covers and harming the fish

since when does handling a fish by the gill plate hurt it? I see people do it all the time
