Lets talk about a hot topic "Appropriate tank size for ____"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think this is true of many species.
I remember recently some posted a link to a paper on fish behaviour. The article was basically saying that fish that have been raised in tanks with a detailed and natural aquascape were healthier than ones in sparsely decorated bare tanks.
Without stimulation some fish suffer for it.
I think this is especially true for intelligent fish like cichlids.
A small tank will only have a minimal amount of room for such decor, providing the fish very little to explore.
A larger area can have lots of decor, defining different area and zones that the fish can explore and swim round.
These types of stimulation have proven to be more beneficial to fish health and it's not surprising.
I have seen lots of oscars moping about in a bare 75 looking pitiful and bored out its brain.
Put one in a big tank with rocks and roots to explore and you have a different animal altogether.
This is basically what I thought. I need to get my tanks scaped ASAP

1. They are fish
2. They are not steel or plastic, they are capable of turning
Personally I would not put a 20 inch fish in a tank that is 20 inches wide (TBH would also depend on the length of the tank)

10+ years ago when I first joined MFK I can recall the Oscar in a 55gallon or 75 gallon debate, now I read posts stating that an Oscar for example would be too big for a 100 gallon tank, LOL

10+ years ago Oscars were listed at peaking at 14 inches, the other day someone tried to tell me Oscars can get 17 inches, I was like WTF?!! I don't know what is going on, did these fish after 10 years all of a sudden inherit some special powers that enable them to get bigger than they were 10 years ago.

I guess the point I am trying to make is, while I agree the bigger the better, judging by what size tank people recommend for an Oscar for example, it just seems that why should we even be able to keep fish if we have them cramped in a glass cage anyways?
what does being fish have to do with making sure they are comfortable as all good hobbyists should do?

Yeah that person was me.You really need to check your facts before you go spouting your mouth off.

Yeah and I need to put you on ignore I suppose? Some of the sizes you quote are based on videos or websites you take days to look up. I am not saying that you will never find a "rae" and yes I mean extremely "rare" fish that may attain a bigger than average size.

But FFS, stop acting like Oscars normally get 17 inches, you argue with me on almost every topic with no actual experience. Please stop with the misconceptions, unless you have exp. please stop posting youtube videos or fish forums that aren't always accurate :)

In another thread you were recommending somebody to keep a buttikoferi in a 110 gallon tank. These fish are capable of reaching 16 to 18 inches with massive bulk. In my opinion they should be kept in a tank twice that size minimum. You say that this philosophy suggests we should not keep fish in tanks at all?
I say people like you that give these fish bare minimum are the very people attracting the attention of animal rights groups wanting us not to keep fish at all.
It's people like you that give these people ammunition.
For fish like those in the videos above, a 180 or 220 is no where near overkill. I can't understand why someone would think it is. I also can't understand why a 75 is deemed acceptable by some either.

God yes I did say a Butti can live long term in a 110-I know this from PERSONAL Experience!!! I have never ever seen a Buttikefori pass 16 inches-please STOP!!! You are spewing info that you either found on a forum or youtube with out any actual experience.

By your logic why should we then be able to even own fish in a glass cage. I will go back to what I told you before why do you argue with someone that has actual exp.?

They are still living creatures that do not need to bump into each other every 2 seconds. Unlike humans when we feel crowded we just move somewhere else. Fish don't have that option in a tank.

That's because most of these people only have a 55-180 gallon tank and the Oscars stop growing early. Go to a zoo or public aquarium, the fish there tend to be alot bigger.

I've never seen a 17 inch Oscar at a fish store or someone's house but I've seen plenty of 17 inch Oscars at public aquariums.

Really? Are yo sure you have seen 17 inch Oscars? FFS, I used to have a 1000 gallon pond dedicated to large cichlids my Oscars peaked at 14 inches (if that) I don't know where some of you get this but it is very misleading and irresponsible IMHO.

You asume a lot about my experience without knowing anything about me.
And I can't be arsed to carry on arguments about fish size.
Please press ignore, I'd be delighted.
