IMG_8109.JPG IMG_8005.PNG I use a tan and black sand mix. I'm in the process of mixing in some finer natural red sand I collected from some desert trips to give the blend an overall reddish tint. The red sand from the second pic is what I'll be mixing in
 
If your bored of red garnet. Switch to idaho creek purple garnet from Kleenblast. There's a location near u and should be $16-$20 per 50lb bag. 36 grain or go with 16. Larger grain is slightly a darker purple.

Where did you get this information?

I am not sure it is accurate. I think you're thinking of Aquasoil.
Any of the 'nitrifying' soils usually do. aquasoil is one of them

Eco-Complete isn't nitrifying and isn't a soil.

It should not cause an ammonia spike.

You were probably thinking of Aquasoil...?
there are some others that do it too, but yeah. We don't really get aquasoil here
