My NEW "Super-Duper Red" EMPEROR STRAIN Firemouths

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How will you make them tougher?
+1

I think inbreeding should be avoided as much as possible here, for example endler guppies are said to have a very weak immune system due to inbreeding amongst themselves while polypterus have different shapes in captive bred specimens. I'm not sure if from inbreeding or not but it smells like it to me.

I think all these fancy marketing names are weird, and just something like "Super red" can do it. Doesn't go overboard right?..

There's extremes and there's extremes.... I would never buy one of those Quasimodo humped back hybrid freak show PARROT CICHLIDS.

On the other extreme SUPPLY AND DEMAND!!! Cichlid keepers are getting drummed into them, all the time, that Wild is best and they're switching off to domesticated fish. People on here get so precious about their F0s and F1s without thinking what affect that has on wildlife. The fall-out for this is over fishing of wild species and less emphasis conservation in the wild.

What seriously is wrong with developing specimens in a domestic environment to their best potential like what Skip is doing? He's concentrating on what makes a Trimac a Trimac... If I want to develop a Firemouth that is true to its roots and holds all the dynamic characteristics then I see that as a brilliant thing

By first selecting only the biggest hardest fish then start selecting for colour. As a rule the biggest fry are the ones that are the most robust and best appetites and best dynamism

Firemouth or thorichthys meeki will do for me.

There's electric Blue JDs, Electric blue Acaras, German Blue rams... the list is endless. I'd rather not have to many over keen hobbiests rading our natural rivers and ponds to feed a growing number of boastfull cichlid keepers

If someone, anyone can line breed a fish for any specific traits and make up a name for it as marketing then call your firemouths whatever you wish.
It's still a firemouth it's still a trimac.
It's a marketing gimmick.

You're very wrong there. The idea is to introduce BETTER QUALITY FIREMOUTHS and get rid of the need to rip apart natural environments to catch WC fish...

Here's a true story that a lot of you guys should feel ashamed of.... Someone I know (who shall remain nameless) regularly visited places to catch wild Thorichthys. No import license not quarantine... He got caught a few times and fined but the fish were just left on to die in their bags.. If that's not cruel I don't know what is

I don't really mind line breeding for colors or traits. But don't like things like blood parrots or any mixed species. But each their own, I will always opt for the most natural form.
There is a huge difference between wild hybridization in African and CA/SA cichlids. There are far more wild African hybrids because most live in lakes and closely together. CA cichlids are more isolated and live in Lakes, rivers and cenotes. Variation will be drastic depending on the sp. Even some have become so isolated they are now considered a new species. The evolution of old world and new world are very different due to habitat IMO.
Some closely related CA cichlids that live in close groups together like thorichthys meeki, and pasionis. As far as I know and read, hybrization is suspected, but not common. It is thought they should interbreed like Africans, but don't as much. My theory or hypothesis that a species will most likely breed with their own kind if present. If their own species isn't, they will chose another species. Having groups of 3 different thorichthys species in the same tank I have noticed each species sticks together. I bet one day pairs of each kind will happen with no interbreeding. I have read threads on The Cichlid Room Companion that many don't advise mixing thorichthys species because of possible hybridization. I disagree and if it was going to happen, I could split pairs up if needed. I'm not worried about it.

Neither would i.Whats your point touchy?

Boastful cichlid keepers?
Weren't you only recently boasting about your success with cichlids?

I think he's aiming it at me and to the best of my knowledge I have no wild caught fish, just true forms.
I believe cyberpants here has F1 fish himself. I just think he gets a little excited and can loose the plot easily.:-))
