Pangasianodon Gigas/Giant Mekong Catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How would you keep an adult, what sized pond?

I have a heated pond, 15,000 gallons. That would be able to handle him in that for quite a few years. I have 50k indoor pond in the works, but that is a couple years down the road.
I would have to have him in my grow out tank for a while cause I have several cats that are over 3ft that i would worry about them being eaten.

Wow, can we see some pics please, that sounds like a monster set up. What 3 ft cats are there?
I try to snap some photos tomorrow, hopefully it's won't be raining yet.
Big cats are Redtails. Have quite a few in there. Also have couple of hybrids, couple of TS, couple of Pacu, even have an albino Wels. Lots of others that I am growing out, that will eventually go into the pond as well

It's a heater from IHC. Submersible heater. It's was a bit expensive, but it is designed for heating ponds. It's works really well. I attached a picture of my control unit. It has website on it if you can read it.

there are approx 22 varieties of pangasius and several of them has eyes below the mouth. I bought some from a local trusted supplier 7 years ago and they turned out to be false. still alive and below 3 feet....disappointing.

I would suggest asking the seller to supply pictures of the breeding pair to verify that what they are selling is genuine.

My personal take is forget about finding a true Giant Mekong Catfish. They are tittering on the brink of extinction and there is some farming activity, which is unclear how successful it is. Watch special reports by Zeb Hogan. No one appears to have access to the farm raised ones except research institutions and maybe major Public Aquaria.

If someone says they can only sell you GMC in no less than quantity of 20, I find it laughable... and sad too. Boy do I want to be wrong but until proven otherwise, I'd say there is no person in the hobby that keeps a GMC.

vincentwugwg vincentwugwg Vincent thinks he does. I'll believe him when the fish breaks 5'-6' mark. Which for a true GMC shouldn't take long, in 2-3 years. They are debatably the fastest growing FW fish on the planet.

Yes, there is a hybridization problem that clouds everything for us, end users.

But you really got to wonder where those MGCs come from in exotic fishing lakes. It's certainly not from a wild caught ones.

If its a farm bred, still it can reach tremendous sizes. Wanna get my hands on those.
