Just want to make sure my fish are going to be happy

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So my tank actually is six foot long and two foot wide. I did end up taking the jaguar back and I do think that was the best choice. Everyone else seems to get along well. They'll chase each other away every now and then but that's about it. We ended up getting a banded convict instead. He has settled in nicely and I think he will do much better in the tank. All fish are between 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 inches

Glad to hear. A lot of people probably might have said keep the jag with that tank size.

Hello; Welcome. There are probably many posts and a few threads about advice from a fish shop. A good "lesson learned" topic. Good that you worked it out.
Can you get good advice from a shop? Yes sometimes but without experience it is so hard to judge.
Can you get good advice from this forum/website? Yes you can, but also some clunkers get posted. May I suggest taking the step of doing some research before getting an unfamiliar fish. May I also suggest you give weight to any suggestions from duanes, tlindsey, oddball and Dr. Strangelove (sp?). There are several others but I do not recall them right now.
Good luck with your tank.

People often learn from other's mistakes and experiences. Yes there is a "lessons learned section", but hardly anyone post there. Does that mean you cannot share an experience elsewhere?
LFS in my area are hardly a source to turn to for solid advice. I agree it might be different else where though. But without tank size info, no one could help with the stocking. Anyone you mentioned in your post would probably want that info to help answer the question. It makes a big difference in CA cichlid aggression.

Hello; Not sure what you are trying to say. I went back and read my post over to see if I somehow implied such a thing. I did not intend to imply a "lessons learned" thread is the only place to get information.
We are sharing information and experience in this thread for example.

Most all the threads outside the lounge have information about the hobby.

Just referring to I like to pass on my mistakes in the past to others in all sections. That is all. I agree it is hard to tell if your getting sound advice anywhere as opinions will vary. One LFS used to give very good advice and employed very knowledgeable staff who were passionate and helpful. Sadly they had a change in management, replaced the staff with inexperienced people. My guess is they are paying the new staff less. The new staff will tell you anything just to get you out the door and move on to the next customer.
Also all other LFS in the area closed, and the only other shops are Pet Smart and Pet Co.
One thing I like about some vendors is I have gotten very good advice from them. I did exactly what they said and had no issues. Honestly that is one reason I like to order online. I'll happily pay the extra in shipping to know what I am getting and good advice.

I'm glad your tank is working out for you at the moment and welcome to mfk.

I would like to mention as no one else has ( I think) that you really should be quarantine your new fish. I made this mistake and it cost me over 30 of my gorgeous cherry barbs that I had raised from fry, this all happened within a few days of a bad columnaris infection that spread like wild fire in my community tank. I never will make that mistake again.

It sounded like you are dropping the new arrivals right in the main tank. Sometimes it does work out but other times and it only takes one the to really sting, you will indeed regret it.

your right we was just able to purchase a tank to use as a quantarine and plan on that in future. Not necessarily for new fish because I think we are well at compacity and may possibly move some later on. But I agree a quarentine tank is so valuable. We did at least go through a complete acclimation when introducing them to the tank. Adding increments of our water to the bag until it was full and then added them to the tank once they were used to the parameters.

The Jag was always a risk, you may have been ok for a while if you gave it a nice big cave to call home, it may have then stayed in there most of the time and left the others alone. Once they get bigger though things can change. JD and Texas is not always a good mix, they may interbreed or may just not get along due to similar colour / patterning. I have a 500 litre with Oscar, Severum, Female Texas (smaller growing and more peaceful), Sajica and Helleri (similar to firemouth) with a few non cichlid tankmates and they get along fine. Best to keep a selection of individual cichlids that are completely dissimilar to each other for best results (in a big tank of course), or a breeding pair with little / nothing else in the tank and a divider handy (depending on the breed / tank size of course!).

I agree a quarantine tank is important. It really helps keep your main tank(s) free from disease.

How are the fish doing now? Do you have pics?
